I don´t know the answer. Ps2 could do 480 p easily. Maybe 1080i was the limit of ps2´s power ( or a upscalling like blu ray upgrading dvd to 720 or 1080p).

So, ps2 could do 1080 i, but was no powerfull enough to get 720p or 1080p.

PS2 can do 480p (that's EDTV, better than SDTV but not HDTV), and only 2 games can do HDTV (true 1080i), both games made by Polyphony Digital: GT4 and Tourist Trophy...

both the xbox and PS2 could do 1080i games, the xbox also had some 720p games, they were limited in the day, especially on the PS2 but they existed as retail games.

So I'm very surprised that the wii it's self doesn't actually have any 1080i games, considering that allot of it's games have simple graphics to begin with, just pointing this out cuz even the weakest console could do 1080i games.

The problem with the Wii is that it's embedded frame buffer is of only 2 MB, so the games would have serious frame problems with resolutions bigger than 16/9 anamorphic 640x448/640x456, the most usual resolutions in Wii. Then the image is stretched to the resolution of 854x480.

You could use main 1TRam as a frame buffer, but it would be so slow that it's not practical.

... 720p is HD and 1080i > 720p so therefore 1080i is HD.

1080i is easier to render becouse it's in fact 540 lines while 720p is full 720 lines

either way ps2 has gone up in my books even more

It was on GT4 which supported 1080interlaced, which is HD but considered worse than 720 progressive.

There were tons of 480progressive games, but 720x480 isn't high definition.
