Forums - Nintendo - More Wii-bashing from incompetent journalists - Times Online article

This article is about investing in nintendo and it's outlook for the future. And his points from an investors point of view are valid. This years revenue will be down compared to last year so investors may shy away. Don't worry folks nintendo will still be raking in the money just not as much which is all wall street cares about.

The quote: "Wii Sports Resort — a game which, among other attractions, simulates throwing a frisbee for a dog.", gives away the author's true feeling here. I think it's going to really kill this guy that WSR will outsell Halo 3 or MW2.

Hes describing a part of the game.

Whats wrong with that?

Tone.   As a writer myself I can easily sense the emotions behind the words.  Here, the author is subtly showing disdain for the title by depicting one facet of the game in a manner that would make the common readership scratch their heads at such a gaming oddity.  Notice how no other listed title was given the same treatment.  Why wasn't Super Mario Galaxy 2, Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii and Wii Music given descriptions or annoted in the same manner?

However, the the tone of his simple single game, single facet desriptor isn't alone and it is the culmination of the disdain, false facts and perceived intent that suggests the overall tone as being more negative towards Nintendo than being objective...as a well paid journalist from a News Corporation media outlet should be.

It's not so much Wii-bashing as the title suggests but negative subjectivity coupled with poor syntax at times, poor editing and poor fact checking.

Awesome. You need to be a writer to do some text interpretation.

But war... war never changes

He's not describing anything.  He's bashing the game with this "offhand" remark.  But if you can't comprehend that, then there isn't much more to say.

Some people might like throwing a frisbee to a dog. He might like it... how do you know he doesn't?

Or is this just another "Zomg everybody hates Wii!" thing again?

LOL.  You & Sqill are funny.

I love how random kids and uneducated people on the internet believe they know more than analysts and the press that get paid to do what they do and have the education that allowed them to get there. The Wii is not going to outsell the PS2. The Wii was never going to have crazy sales forever. The bottom was always going to fall out eventually, especially with a complete lack of decent games. Casual people were always going to move on to something else. These are facts of life that the Ninteno fanboys need to understand. Also, what a few thousand people on an internet forum think means exactly diddly squat to Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, or anyone else in the real world...

you sound just like one of the kids you are trying to call out. before you call angry nintendo fans uneducated, here's some food for thought.

  • the author, quick to point out the wii's complete lack of software coming, ignores titles like NSMBWii, wii fit plus, and the many 3rd party offerings coming. all of this will likely give at least some boost in hardware sales.
  • while not bashing the wii itself, the tone he uses when referring to WSR oozes synicism. he mentions the frisbee minigame but conveniently ignores swordfighting and jetskiing.
  • the author says the wii is struggling to attract buyers. it's two competitors still have to combine their sales to compete with it.
  • he calls the wii's upcoming lineup "anaemic". i'll let you research the list of upcoming wii games yourself.

i don't completely disagree with the article, as it brings up some valid points. take a look at the big picture, though. PS3 sales get worse every year and the 360 has needed several price cuts to maintain its sales, yet you don't hear these "analysts" writing alarmist articles about their situations. nintendo has seen profits decline, that much is true. but they are still making tons of money in an economy in shambles. i say we all just slow down and wait for the 360 and PS3 to outsell the wii for an extended period worldwide before we say nintendo's in any trouble.

Journalists don't care about being wrong they just care about making headlines. He/she will now be able to write the "Nintendo's fortunes turn" article in late September.

I love how people like you love to talk out of their ass. Im studying to be a Journalist and what your saying is complete bull. Fanboys like you like to spin things in order to make themselves feel better.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

This comment was made in the context of this article and of course I did not mean to suggest that all journalists are like this.  Feel free to take issue with my comments regarding journalism but by calling me a fanboy you risk falling foul to the same issue i have with the above journalist, jumping to ill-formed conclusions.

As a journalist student, do you think this article was particulary well researched, written and draws reasonable conclusions based on all available facts?

All I see is a journalist with some facts which you nintendo fans do not like. That does not make him incompetent. Your comments however makes you sound like total douchebags.
