@johnsobas

I understand that you think he is wrong but you at least have to come in with some kind of rebuttal other than "out his ass" or "assumptions" because everyone here is only assuming Sony is still losing so much money.

It's cold hard facts that Sony is losing money.

Show me then.

Financial report doesn't prove PS3 is losing all that money.

Doesn't Sony have more internal studios and anyone else? Haven't they been working on a shit load of titles between this year and last?

Hasn't Sony been pouring money into R&D for the PSP-3000 that released last year and the PSP-Go that is releasing this year?

Hasn't Sony been pouring money into R&D for the PS3 Slim if it indeed real?

Haven't they poured more money into advertising?

I don't know exactly how much each factors into their loss for the previous year but I can say it pretty safe to say that all of that lose isn't directly connected to the PS3.

Anyone thinking so is just assuming and that is no worse than what the topic creator is doing. Am I right?

I am pretty sure if MS had around 15 studios working on stuff instead of just 4-5 they wouldn't have looked so hot either. Am I right?

If next report shows profit there will be a lot of people here who will get a nice big "I told you so".

You're just silly. Sony themselves have stated that PS3 is the big money sink. All the way since the launch in Nov 2006.

Almost every quarter the Entertainment division has lost several $100 millions and Sony has never said it's due to R&D. The division is still losing big money, including the latest quarter as demonstrated by the financial report that was released just a few days ago.

LOL. Who is the one being silly? You expect Sony to be like "Yeah the reason we are losing money is because we have motion control in development! It won't be out for a few years, and hell, we might even scrap it because its a prototype and every prototype doesn't make it through but I'll let everyone know what we are doing, so that... when the time comes to announce it... no one will care" Seriously slime... like I said this line of thought process is to advanced for you.

R&D is assumed to always take place and accout for a certain portion of the costs in the Entertainment division. Everyone knows that all the big three are developing new consoles, including a PSP2 and a PS4. Even work on a hardware revision with it's associated costs is assumed.

The only thing you can come up with that could mean extraordinary costs is the motion control tech. The costs for developing a simple wand are negilible though in the big picture of things.

i'm just talking about PS3 hardware alone, there was something else losing money too, PS2 and PSP should have been profitable as well.

R&D, PSP SW, Vaio, Advertising, strong yen, and various other things.

I see, $44 mill from PS3 alone.

The rest of the losses I believe come from the 1st party software business which was dimensioned after a 120 million selling Playstation console, not a 60 million selling console like the PS3 is. In this gen the size of the 1st party developer teams are over-dimensioned, so naturally the projected software sales targets cannot have been met.

John - your silly if you think Sony was talking about retail. Sony's customers are the retailers and they could care less what happens to their product after it leaves their hands. Just like SW shipments to retail Sony CFO was talking about a 10% loss they recieveper console sold.

@TWRoO.

The Wii isn't close to the wall, the wall is far far lower than that. Its just that cost reductions are logarithmic and the Wii started further along the curve (but nowhere near the asymptote).

By that logic the PS2 would never have been able to get to as lower price as it has because it would have hit 'the wall' at some point.

I think it would be a fair guess that the Wii probably costs less that $150 to manufacture now given they were profiting at launch and have had three years.

This is a PR statement, what they care about is public perception.  Why would it surprise you if they were talking about the price in stores?
