Forums - Sales Discussion - "Resource shift to the Wii"

Hus said: 3rd party aint selling to great on the Wii.
Your going to have to figure a way to prove that, since plenty of 3rd parties are selling well on the Wii, Rayman, Red Steel, Madden, COD all have done very well. I know American sales of Rayman hit 375,000 you really can't complain about that. COD and Madden we're on par with ps3 sales as well, so it's hard to justify dropping support when your ps3 counterparts aren't selling better. Red steel continue to generate rumors of a sequal, so apperantly Ubisoft is happy with it's sales there. Secondly these surge of Wii development is based on software sales. Do you think if COD sold poorly EA would have announced MOH: Vanguard? I don't think so.

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=13153 Gamasutra's weekly column, "Saling The World", covers the top five sellers for every available platform in the United States, Japan, and Europe, providing an important update of sales patterns worldwide. This week's charts, with data taken from March 15th, 2007, include PGA tours, roads to victory, and yet more warfighting, in the advanced sense. Data for "Saling The World" comes courtesy of the public sales information on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.co.jp, with sales split out for each platform and territory, and pre-orders disregarded. This results in a true sense of what games are selling worldwide on the real-time updated service, as follows: Nintendo Wii North America: 1. Wii Play (Nintendo), 2. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 (EA Sports), 3. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Nintendo), 4. WarioWare: Smooth Moves (Nintendo), 5. Sonic and the Secret Rings (Sega). Japan: 1. Wii Sports (Nintendo), 2. Sonic to Himitsu no Ring (Sega), 3. Hajimete no Wii (Nintendo), 4. Fire Emblem: Akatsuki no Megami (Nintendo), 5. Zelda no Densetsu: Twilight Princess (Nintendo). UK: 1. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Nintendo), 2. WarioWare: Smooth Moves (Nintendo), 3. Sonic and the Secret Rings (Sega), 4. Excite Truck (Nintendo), 5. Rampage: Total Destruction (Midway). Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 moves impressive numbers in its first week of release in the United States, beating out the ever-popular The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess in weekly sales. Wii Play still remains at the top of the chart for the time being, however. Europe's list, meanwhile, sees the introduction of Rampage: Total Destruction, which crawls onto the tail end of the chart thanks to a recent price drop at Amazon.
Nice to see Tiger doing weel in Us and Sonic ahead of Wii Play in Japan and third in UK. It's just an indication, not total sales... but a good one nevertheless.

I'm going to use my list from another thread:
(Wii) Rayman Raving Rabbids - Ubisoft - 375,250 (Wii) Red Steel - Ubisoft - 335,500 (Wii) Madden NFL 07 - EA - 311,250 (Wii) Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz - Sega - 267,250 (Wii) Call of Duty 3 - Activision - 251,250 (Wii) Marvel: Ultimate Alliance - Activision - 207750 (Wii) Trauma Center: Second Opinion - Atlus - 172,000 (Wii) Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 - Atari - 134,500 (Wii) Need for Speed: Carbon - EA - 128,250 (Wii) Tony Hawk Downhill Jam - Activision - 123,500 (Wii) Elebits - Konami - 114,250 (Wii) Rampage: Total Destruction - Midway - 95,500 (Wii) Sonic and the Secret Rings - Sega - 88,500 (Wii ) Super Swing Golf - Tecmo - 69,250 (Wii) Rapala Trophies: Pro Tournament Fishing - Activision - 68,750 (Wii) Metal Slug Anthology - SNK - 64,750
Between Japan and Europe you can (probably) double the numbers on most of those games for worldwide sales ... Now, when you look at total development cost for most of those games as compared to sales the vast majority of those games would have broken even or turned a profit. Now look at the PS3's sales
(PS3) Madden NFL 07 - EA - 335,250 (PS3) Call of Duty 3 - Activision - 212,000 (PS3) Need for Speed: Carbon - EA - 185,500 (PS3) Fight Night Round 3 - EA - 168,250 (PS3) Marvel: Ultimate Alliance - Activision - 160,000 (PS3) Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 - EA - 113,000 (PS3) NBA 2K7 - Take 2 - 111,500 (PS3) Tony Hawk Project 8 - Activision -112,000 (PS3) Ridge Racer 7 - Namco - 98,500 (PS3) Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII - Ubisoft - 76,000 (PS3) Full Auto 2: Battlelines - Sega - 75,500 (PS3) Virtua Fighter 5 - Sega - 56,750 (PS3) Major League Baseball 2K7 - Take 2 - 34,750 (PS3) Sonic the Hedgehog - Sega -33,250
Now, using the 500,000 break even number from Namco-Bandai, most of these publishers will have lost money producing games for the PS3 ... So which platform will be losing support in 1 year?

Seems like Sonic and Tiger are doing pretty well, but SSX Blur fails to make an impact on the North American marked. Kind of a mixed bag sales-wise for third-party Wii titles.

None of those PS3 games are exclusives except RR7 which was probably based off RR6. In other words, they made/will make their money on the 360 and only have to cover porting costs on the PS3. Does point out the lack of third-party exclusives on the PS3 so far though, guess they're all waiting. ;)

r2007 said: Hus said: a year from now they all will be droping that support. 3rd party aint selling to great on the Wii. Really? Ubisoft Sales up by 78 percent thanks to Wii Game publisher Ubisoft has declared that it experienced 78 percent sales growth during January in the US alone. It is the number one independent publisher on the Wii, and the new figures are driven by the Wii.
Where does Ubisoft specifically say it's due to the Wii? It sounds like that was the opinion of an article writer trying to make the Wii look good. Ubisoft sold over 60% more Xbox 360 games in January than Wii games, but it's the Wii that's responsible for sales being up 78%? How do you figure?

You'd have to look at Ubi's 360 sales from a year ago.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Well, one assumes that since Ubisoft have been selling 360 games for a long time, and have only recently been selling Wii games, that their recent increases are due to the new market being created by the Wii.

NICE :) Two games that I really hoped would do ok, hopping for really nice numbers for those games in march sales. Most important nice to see these games beat Wii play. (which I honestly think is crap, but of course for 10$ it can be worth it) I don't know about the Wii vs Xbox360, BUT I do think that bouth these systems have great sales. Xbox360 attach ratio is insane. So far 3rd parties is selling really well on Wii and xbox360. I dont have any numbers for xbox360. But as I stated in another thread, Wii isn't doing as badly as some people think, 3 games above 300k, 3 games above 200k and 5 games above 100k from 3rd parties alone during 3 months isn't that bad (USA numbers only).
