Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo on why hardcore titles can't sell on the Wii (and a question)

I know why third party games don't sell.

Name me one hardcore game that isn't a low budget, niche game or gimped port, that didn't sell.

thank you.

Madworld was not low budget. The shitty return from being a Wii exclusive really hurt Sega. They put money into that game.

Core games don't sell on the Wii? Look at MH3 lines.

The reasons past core games on the Wii don't sell too well is because of one of these reasons, or even two or three:

1. They're niche.
2. They're new IPs.
3. They're way too short to justify the price.

You're waay off Soriku.  The main reason is marketing.  The rest of the reasons are secondary.

SEGA has done a LOT worse last year supporting PS360 than it has this year supporting the Wii, just saying.

The conduit was also a Wii exclusive. Alpha protocol will have good sales on the PS360.

Nevermind

Yes it was  :)

Now compare this year's financial statements to last years  ;)

Eh, that's debatable. The only thing in MadWorld that would have cost them any money was the voice acting, that's it. The art style was good, but definitely something that could have been made on the cheap, and the game was very short, and not without its freezing bugs and framerate problems (they weren't prohibitive to the game, but they were there)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Oh please S.T.A.G.E., you honestly don't believe that. Making PS3 graphics alone cost more than creating Madworld entirely. Valve spent more money marketing Left 4 Dead than Platinum Games spent on Madworld.

Every company puts money into a game, but Sega didn't put in that much. They new fully well what they were getting into when they made Madworld. IF you think Madworld was such a heatsink at 260k, why is Sega releasing Valkyria Chronicles 2? MW outsold it in Others, and is 60k away from outselling it in America. This is after 20 weeks on retail to VC's 66. VC's saving grace was Japan, which recently helped it pass the 500k mark. Sega definitely didn't give up on the legs of that game, and it isn't happening with Madworld, or The Conduit for that matter.

The Wii is their best system, and their performance in the past quarter won't alter their support for it one inch.

When I say hardcore titles, I mean third party hardcore. This is before I get bombarded with arguments.

http://news.spong.com/article/18751/Nintendo-Not-Sure-Why-Hardcore-Wii-Titles-Dont-Sell

Pretty quick article, but an interesting read into one of the minds in Nintendo.

On a side note, I spoke to a friend of mine today and he said that he was asked by a friend if he wanted to buy a 360 with five games, because he bought an updated version. He turned down a $200.00 offer, because he said he would play too much. He's trying to cut back on gaming and thats why he has the Wii. Good games come in from time to time instead of in a flood like the other systems. I was quite shocked to hear this, because he has one of the largest purchased PS2 collections of anyone I know. He basically sticks with the PS2 and the Wii. We end up playing the PS2 over the Wii, but when we have chicks over we play the Wii like crazy. He only plays the 360 and PS3 at my house and he said he's fine with that, but he wants to cut back on gaming. He's like 5 years older than me, so I understand his point...but am baffled at the same time. Any thoughts?

From your description, it sounds like the other two consoles are for men not trying to impress women, and the Wii gets you laid. Other than that, no ... no thoughts. Oh! I have one. To each his own.

Obviously making a PS3 game would cost more than making a Wii game. Sega invested in these game and expected a suitable return because of the installed base of the Wii.
