Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo on why hardcore titles can't sell on the Wii (and a question)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

It has to come together as their installed base increases.

I'm with your friend the reason I have my wii is because of the price difference then other systems. The wii is also more reliable and me always being strapped for money I can pick up a good game for 19.99 to 29.99 and enjoy the heck of it. Some examples of games that I have had a blast playing at that price is madworld, dokapon kingdom, boom blox, re 4 wii edition, no more heroes, puzzle quest, new play control pikmin, etc...

So called third party "core" games on Wii are either very niche or just aren't good enough, there's really only a handful of third party Wii games that unanimously scored a 9.0+ by critics. Were is Wii's GTA4, Modern Warfare, Assassin's Creed... etc.

Core Wii titles cannot replicate what you can have on other consoles with different controls. just the Controller alone is not enough to make the game appealing (even though it plays better on Wii than other consoles i.e. Resident Evil 4). It has to do something additional that comes directly from the game design.

Marketing is another issue. A developer must think differently and go invite the people to try the game. This means going out there to show the game to people is a possible strategy

I really think that developers are just not giving their best efforts for the Wii.

nintendo can't get the hardcore.

Marketing issues maybe? Nintendo has managed to turn non-gamers into gamers, now the problem is how to get these people into "core" gaming.

I also believe that there is a need to attract some of the PS3/360 gamers into buying Wii's or more Wii games if they already has the console. Games like the Conduit won't have much success here as well as multi-plat games that is inferior to the HD versions. Games like NMH, MadWorld and Muramasa won't do much either because they are niche and artistic.
In Japan things might change with huge games like MH3 and DQX (and maybe ToG and FFCCCB, but I don't know if those games are big enough). In the west it's harder because MH and DQ isn't that popular outside of Japan. The Wii should need games in the MGS/FF/CoD/Halo calibur, preferable developed by well-known studios. If Bethesda (spelling?) or Bioware released big titles (not some half-assed money-maker) that would be positive.

Of course, Nintendo's own games may be needed to actually attract people and make way for third-parties. NSMB Wii, SMG2, LoZ Wii and Metroid are important core titles that really need to sell. (Metroid might not be as big as Mario and Zelda but as a Metroid fan I have to mention it :p)

If things hasn't changed in lets say a year and a half (maybe a bit less) than it's better luck next gen I guess...

And to this I add: marketing, marketing, marketing.

I know why third party games don't sell.

Name me one hardcore game that isn't a low budget, niche game or gimped port, that didn't sell.

thank you.

Core games don't sell on the Wii? Look at MH3 lines.

The reasons past core games on the Wii don't sell too well is because of one of these reasons, or even two or three:

1. They're niche.
2. They're new IPs.
3. They're way too short to justify the price.

1. Madworld and the conduit deserved better.

2. That is understandable.

3. How would most gamers know that its too short to justify the price?

How would most people know it was too short? Studies have shown that on average...

A person who has a good experience with a product will recommend it to 3 people.

A person who has a bad experience with a product will tell 10 people not to purchase it.

MadWorld and The Conduit were both new IP's, both were short and have a look at their covers if you don't think they look niche. I can't see how anybody would look at The Conduit's cover and think it was high quality..

If the Conduit had been on any other system, it would've been ignored. This was a chance for Wii gamers who are fans of FPS to come out of hiding and enjoy a truly thoughtful shooter. Heres to hoping it sells well LTD. I guess what you would call a niche title, is only a niche title on the Wii. Team Ico games used to be considered Niche titles on the PS2, but their quality was finally seen once word of mouth went out. I find your studies to be interesting. I am a salesman. In practice it depends on the scenario, but wat you're saying could happen.

Kinda like how lifestyle/exercise games or platformers are only called niche titles on the HD consoles?

Wii is a different market to the HD systems. They are both just about equal in terms of install base but one has a greater online presence than the other. They are both as important as each other. That said, Call of Duty: World at War sold over a million copies, Red Steel sold over a million copies, Call of Duty 3 sold of a million copies and then you can look at the rail shooters with House of the Dead 2 & 3 selling over a million, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles selling over a million.. As did Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime 3..

I don't think the shooter genre is a niche market on Wii but the titles that have released in that genre have been either niche in themselves, lower quality than on competing systems or simply remakes.

Finally I think if we are ever going to see a hugely popular shooter on Wii, it'll have to focus on Wii Sports as it's main competition/inspiration and not other shooters from the HD market, a market with different values from that of the Wii market.

How is a lifestyle/ exercise game a niche? I dunno. Ask the mothers of the world. Wii Fit is a mothers dream game. It is in no way a niche if it sells 20 m units. LTD the Wii fit will probably outsell the PS3 (which is even more sad for gaming). The shooter market on the Wii is a niche. The highest selling shooter on the Wii sold 1.5 M copies and it was a Nintendo first party game. That game was Metroid Prime 3. Platform games sell well on the Wii as long as they are first party. If there is going to be a popular shooter on the Wii, it would have to be an off-shoot of Wii Sports. Probably like an Alien Skeet game or someting.
