A lot of what ifs and when you then combine this with the inevitable reply from Nintendo and Microsoft you end up with a ton of what ifs.

If the Slim launched in August ignoring a ton of what ifs it will I think produce a smoothed 40% rise in sales.

I think there's some pent up demand for the PS3. Everyone is waiting for a price drop so sales are lagging right now. I say 150% in the first month dropping to 80% increase over the holidays (it can't get any worse at this point).

Not as many what ifs as you would think. All signs currently point to only one possibility of the six you suggest.

For various reasons including leaks by reliable moles, Gran Turismo 5 will almost certainly not be launching until late November at the earliest, with a December release more likely by the day. Either way, this is well after the PS3 slim's projected release.

I really don't know how any informed person can honestly think that the MASSIVE evidence regarding the slim is all fake, so the thing definitely is real and is getting released this year before November.

There have been numerous rumors and leaks regarding an upcoming price cut. Between the official statement ballparking PS3 manufacturing costs around $240-$300 dollars to the credible Ars Mole confirming one is coming there can also be very little doubt by any informed person at this point that a price drop of some sort is definitely coming.

In regards to how much Sony will cut off the PS3's price, one need only look at Sony's sales and financial predictions for the division for this fiscal year to be painted the answer. First of all there is really no possible way that Sony can increase PS3 yoy sales by the 40% needed to attain their still current 13 million sales expectation by the end of March without a $100 price cut, and even then I wouldn't expect it to be easy. However, even more convincing is the fact that Sony expects the gaming division to report a surprisingly massive loss for the 2010 year despite a relatively better than expected 1st quarter. One has to wonder how this could this possibly be considering that the PS3 will be making a massive profit with it's recently narrowed down manufacturing cost and the PSP Go! which is believe to be cheaper to manufacture than the PSP-3000 and retails for $80 more. Even if software continued to sputter all throughout March it's simply inconceivable that Sony's Networking division could be bleeding so badly with a stabalizing economy and three massively profitible systems.

Taking all of this into account, they all point to the slim launching sometime within the next 3 months at $299.99.

Last year (2008), the PS3 ($399) sold 4,674,000 units between August 3rd and December the 28th. The console had a bad holiday season.

Now, this year if a $299 Slim releases in a few weeks, it should do over 6.5M units in this period, meaning the PS3 would be near 30M by the years end, not 26M.

Even if the Slim releases in October time, it should still do better than the previous year, meaning the VERY LEAST the PS3 can be at by the years end is 27.5M.

But so far PS3 is doing 10% below last yr numbers.. So if there is no price cut than i think it will do not 4.67m rather it will do aroun 4m.. But with slim and price cut 6.5 - 7m look possible.
