Unfortunately the flip side of this is that any such closing off of information tends to leave people who are interested in the development process in the dark. Theres an important difference in bad mouthing a platform and giving a blow by blows account of the trials and tribulations. I don't see how hes exactly badmouthed the PS3 when hes said explicitly that on release both versions will be par.

"Badmouth" perhaps isn't the right term but as I said before, those who want such info on the development process can find it elsewhere. This kind of stuff exposed to the mainstream gaming community is just more fodder for pointless flamewars and would end up costing Carmack some copies of Rage.

One disc vs two remember? Perhaps hes compensating for the PR earlier from that issue? At the end of the day it'll probably go something like this: Runs slightly better on 360 with MSAA but two discs vs Sony 1 disc that way its a pro and a con for both sides of the equation. That way that both sides can feel they 'have won' on the issues because your 360 fanboys won't care that it has two discs as it runs better and the PS3 fanboys won't care as they have one disc to manage and hence 'the superiority of BR'. Also if theres a PS3 install (like with most open world games) the Xbox 360 owners are going to do that too as well. If he can't do seperate but equal he can manage something closer to equivelent.

Tease.

Carmack has pretty much always spoken his mind about engine development, Open GL vs DirectX, various graphics cards, etc.

I'm sure the PR guys hate it, but he just believes in being open about anything technical - remember Carmack is the guy who for years insistend on releasing source code to the community to foster learning and sharing of ideas.

Here, he's simply stating where the engine is, and how its not performing as well for PS3 yet. He also seems confident it will be performing for PS3 by the time of actual game launch.

Sure, people can use that for their own agendas - but that doesn't mean he should keep quiet. I'd far prefer more of Carmack's honesty in this industry than the headlong plunge after low risk profits that I feel is threatening creativity and openness in the industry.

I've never know Carmack to ever really badmouth anything without factual evidence - for example he correctly called out early versions of DirectX for genuine failings at that time.

Come launch in 2010, I'm pretty sure we'll get an engine well optimized on all platforms. Hopefully, it will also turn out that Rage is a pretty good game, too.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

according to the almighty wikipedia, Rage is indeed going to be 4 dvds, and an uncompressed size of 1 terrabyte, yikes

Soon the Darkside will be irresistable and will crush the MS rebel scum underfoot.

The Wii owners are like Ewoks. The Evil empire will tolerate them but turn their forest moon into a secret base.

X360->PS3 ports start out life having to run on one PowerPC core (rather than 3), and with only 32x550MHz vertex+pixel pipes, rather than 48x500MHz.

Its takes some time to farm off tasks to the SPEs, and rework your rendering engine to take advantage of the SPEs, to augment the GPU, as well.

Give Carmack some time. He's awesome. Rage is supposed to work wonders, with regards to streaming textures and environments -- the PS3's HDD is definately the best device for such work between the HD consoles. I imagine they are working hard to bring the PS3 version up to speed -- they just need time.

That's old information. It's 2 DVDs.

^^ But it's fun to have people nashing teeth over a famed developer saying this!

meh, Carmack did once say that PS3 development was lagging behind...so really this is no surprise, and the game still has a fair amount of time before it's released....so I reckon we should wait a for a pro to work their magic over at eurogamer, then we'll know which version is superior and by how much, then this thread can continue....but for now it should be on pause.
