Squill & Pristine
Carmack has pretty much always spoken his mind about engine development, Open GL vs DirectX, various graphics cards, etc.
I'm sure the PR guys hate it, but he just believes in being open about anything technical - remember Carmack is the guy who for years insistend on releasing source code to the community to foster learning and sharing of ideas.
Here, he's simply stating where the engine is, and how its not performing as well for PS3 yet. He also seems confident it will be performing for PS3 by the time of actual game launch.
Sure, people can use that for their own agendas - but that doesn't mean he should keep quiet. I'd far prefer more of Carmack's honesty in this industry than the headlong plunge after low risk profits that I feel is threatening creativity and openness in the industry.
I've never know Carmack to ever really badmouth anything without factual evidence - for example he correctly called out early versions of DirectX for genuine failings at that time.
Come launch in 2010, I'm pretty sure we'll get an engine well optimized on all platforms. Hopefully, it will also turn out that Rage is a pretty good game, too.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
