Forums - Nintendo - The nintendo wii makes video game history

The wii is the only console in history to not only stay as the same price since launch for almost 3 years now,

but actually raise the price in some places in europe.

Its also the most profitable console in history making between 100$ to 150$ on each console sold.

Its also the fastest selling console in history.

Not to mention many of the games on it made by nintendo are selling like crazy.

wii fit, mario kart wii, wii play all sold over 10million and thats just some of their best sellers.

Feel free to add anything else about the wiis success.

That is incorrect.

Nintendo made over $10 billion profit in the last 3 years.... but even if ALL of that profit was from Wii hardware alone that would work out to ~$230 per console.

However splitting up the Wii and DS, and then hardware from software it won't be nearly as much. (probably $50 at best, and more likely ~$30)

Don't be so sure that they are making $100 - $150 per console as well. They have one of the major disadvantages that has affected Sony so hard. It has also hurt the Japanese car makers. The Value of the Yen has gained significantly on the US Dollar because of our high inflation since last year. $250 today converts to about 23,000 Yen. 3 years ago when the Wii came out $250 was converting to about 30,000 Yen. Which means that Nintendo is technically selling that same $250 console here in the US with a 22% price cut from its original price which means for them it would be like them selling them at $195 at launch.

If the wii hasn't already sold the most controllers ever, you can bet it will before the gen is done. When you factor in wiimotes, nunchuks, classic controlls, wave birds, M+ and balance boards, the attach rate for controllers is probably higher than the attach rate for games.

That estimate of profit for every console sold seems a little high.

LOL its so true, I have had my Wii since launch and I think we have 10 (retail) games. Controllers though, we have 4 Wii-Motes, 2 Nunchucks, 1 Balance Board, 1 DDR Pad, 4 Gamecube Controllers (although 2 of these I already owned). How do you classify the other attachments where you insert the Wii-mote into it like the racing wheel, gun accessory, or the guitar.

Attachments or peripherals yes... but not controllers. A controller has to be able to work on it's own.

Wii remote, Balance Board and arguably the Classic controller (it only relies on the remote for power) are controllers.

Nunchuck, WM+ are not.

---

Even so, the attach ratio for controllers is probably higher than any previous console yes, but I doubt it is higher than the ratio for games (though it could be true for attachements/peripherals depending on if you add plastic shells) The game ratio is 7.3 games per console (going by shipped figures) Even if every single Wii owner has 4 Wii remotes, we know less than half have a balance board, so that makes it 4.5, and I highly doubt the Classic controller ratio even is much higher than 0.5 per Wii owner.

I believe I shall do some guesswork (just for fun, this is no longer part of my reply to anyone in particular)

CONTROLLERS
Wii remote  ~~ 2.70 per console
Balance Board ~~ 0.41 (no need to guess that one)
Classic ~~ 0.60
Dance mats ~~ 0.02
Microphones ~~ 0.02

+ GC bought specifically for Wii ~~ 0.09

Total = ~~ 3.84 attach ratio

ATTACHMENTS (useful ones)

Nunchuck ~~ 1.90
Motion Plus ~~ 0.05
Guitar ~~ 0.12 (estimated 6 million guitars)

errrm... can anyone name any more that actually do something?

ATTACHMENTS (plastic shells)

Wheel ~~ 0.60 (0.3 is for Mario Kart alone, I guess in general people have bought an extra 1 wheel)
zapper ~~ 0.05
3rd party wheels ~~ 0.10
3rd party guns ~~ 0.07
Other junk ~~ 0.20 (higher simply because this junk is usually sold in packs of 5-10 shells as it is)

PERIPHERALS (other)
Wii Speak ~~ 0.04 (which is about 2 million of them... I could be a bit high here)
3rd party sensor bars ~~ 0.01 (and that is still probably too high... as it works out about 500,000)
3rd party charge systems ~~ 0.05

OTHER (more junk like console stands)
~~ 0.1

--------

So for the proper controllers the ratio is probably about, or less than 4 per console... including nunchuck/guitar etc it is probably still only about 6 per console (still less than the number of games)
Obviously all these are rough guesses, so feel free to disagree with me on remote/nunchuck ratios... but I don't think I will be far off.
