Forums - PC - The truth about Vista?

I noticed that, I figure that's what I would do. I just heard problems about people updating from XP -> Vista on the same PC and having problems. Although if yo u have the right specs and everything it should be fine since it won't be a HUGE change.

The problem with the XP --> Vista transition is Vista uses (going by my system) 3x the RAM while doing nothing as opposed to XP, and it also requires a decent graphics card to support Aero.

Vista --> 7 shouldn't be as painful because apparently 7 is less of a burden on systems.

See that's typical not full knowledge argument about xp vs vista.

Just becouse it adresses memory in a diffrent way than xp does,  it doesn't mean it uses 3 times more just for OS. Also afaik Vista will adress diffrent amounts of ram depenging on how much you have in computer.

A lot of bad press about vista comes from people jumping on th system early with crappy computers (think around the lines of single core cpu with 512mb of ram) and lack of good drivers in initial months.

I used Vista for more than 12 months and it was very enjoyable experience after a week or two of getting used to diffrent interface. Also the system was very clean and weren't suffering from slowing down over months from instalation.

I use W7 RC now and Vista is better system at the moment (W7 still needs some polishing).

Then again W7 might be first microsoft system where typical policy of don't buy before first service pack comes out  doesn't apply.

Vista isn't quite as bad as people say it is, but it's basically a really slow, bloated and heavy XP with some minor enchancements that don't justify its pricetag.

If you want to upgrade your OS from XP, it's better to either wait for W7 or switch to a Linux distro.

I see, would it be best to wait until Windows 7 comes out to get a new PC?
Or I could just get an XP one but I'd like to have something a little more up to date since I will have it for a long time.

If you buy a PC with Vista now you get a free upgrade to 7 when it launches.

That's cool. Got a link?

And Vista isn't bad. Just don't expect much of a difference from XP.

No, but thanks. I think I'll order it from Dell.

It's pretty good now I've been using vista since 2007 when i got my laptop, i love it now it runs smoothly now and it's start's up pretty fast now, But I'm upgrading to windows 7 soon i think you can get windows 7 for free its part of MS vista program thing they have I'm not sure though that's what i heard from an other forum

Only if you bought a PC with Vista after June of this year :(

I wonder if that includes installing Vista. My other desktop I just installed my old as sin copy of Vista on it since i didnt have an extra XP key. The key was never used before a few day ago.

Vista is nowhere near as bad as people make out. It's definitely a resource hog, but if you have a well spec'd PC it is much faster and responsive than XP.

I see Vista as the recession we had to have. It made a lot of architecture changes that forced lazy programmers to work within the limitations Microsoft let them create software for their product. Because no one took MS seriously we ended up with incompatible software and hardware drivers.

Windows 7 takes advantage of the 3 year head start Vista made on getting everyone up to scratch and polishes it even further. Other employees at my work have been running Windows 7 in a production environment since the first beta and have nothing but positive reviews. I'll be installing the RTM version on the weekend after almost 3 years with Vista.

Too pricey? =/. I found some good coupons for 20-25% off on some of their PCs.
