Vista is nowhere near as bad as people make out. It's definitely a resource hog, but if you have a well spec'd PC it is much faster and responsive than XP.
I see Vista as the recession we had to have. It made a lot of architecture changes that forced lazy programmers to work within the limitations Microsoft let them create software for their product. Because no one took MS seriously we ended up with incompatible software and hardware drivers.
Windows 7 takes advantage of the 3 year head start Vista made on getting everyone up to scratch and polishes it even further. Other employees at my work have been running Windows 7 in a production environment since the first beta and have nothing but positive reviews. I'll be installing the RTM version on the weekend after almost 3 years with Vista.
