Forums - PC Discussion - Spec/Price for my new PC?

I've had my PC for a few years now and I think it's time for an upgrade.

What price and specs would I be looking at for what I wanna do?

I wouldn't game much, but I would like to have the ability to play low to medium level games, nothing too radical. I don't want to have to upgrade for a while, I'd like to be able to have several internet tabs open and programs running without freezing up the PC.

I figure I will be getting Vista (or Windows 7, when does it come out?)

I'm thinking 4 GB RAM but how would it stand in the long run?

I'd like to have bluetooth as well. A couple of card readers for the popular formats.

For HDD space, a few hundred GBs would be fine, the PC I have now is only 50 GB + a 25 GB Backup D:// drive.

What am I looking at video and sound card and processor wise?

Above average, but not too fancy.

Around the Network

A Phenom II X4 940 CPU at rufly $175 (I think)

An ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB GPU at rufly $175

Sound card Creative Sound Blatser X-FI Xtreme Audio at rufly $50 (bulk/OEM version)

4GB of cheap RAM is very fine

If you're not getting a monitor, then a set up of Phenom II X4, 6GB DDR3, 4870 1GB, 750W PSU, case, motherboard, and hard drive shouldn't cost more than $1000. You can downgrade to around $400 if you just want an average computer.

I'd like for it to be less than $1000, but I'm not gonna get an average one.
I'll look into the stuff, thanks.

Edit: Oh and I'm already set for a Monitor so the tower is all I need.

What Intel Processor setup would be equivalent to the Phenom?

Windows 7 releases in October, I would definitely wait until then to build a new one. Windows 7 blows away Vista and will replace XP as the best available computer OS...

Take these, grab another SATA cable (the motherboard in the combo only comes with one), and pick out a DVD drive and case (not to mention any other things you may need, fans, keyboard, mouse, monitor, whatever).

That's basically what I just bought, though a slightly worse processor (I got the 955) and slightly better video card (I had a 4870).  And it's a beastly machine I put together. :D

I love this comp. For a great gaming PC it's best bang for your buck.

If you want to save some money, ditch the sound card.

Unless you are an enthusiast or have some crazy 5.1 PC se4tup, it really isn't necessary.

Haha yea I don't plan on having the best sound card, as long as it is in working condition :P.
Oh snap I forgot about newegg, I gotta check that out.

Here's a good site that does a System Builder guide.
These PCs are actually probably stronger than you need but they will last you a long time :)

* I agree to wait for Windows 7 or get Vista with the Free Upgrade option since Windows 7 is much better (get 64 bit version!)
