Forums - Sony - Will there be a PS4?

Even if the PS3 flops ( doubt it ) there will be a PS4 ... just to try and get back the investment ...

Sony is an entertainment and hardware company.  I can't see them wanting to give up the hardware side of the business.  Now Microsoft on the other hand....  they are known as a Software developer first and foremost.  It makes more sense for them to not enter in the console race next gen.  It makes way more sense for them to be a giant software house.

@DarkNight_DS: Even if Sony doesn't use the Cell for anything else, some other companies will (and are using it already). Sony probably gains some money in royalties for that, being part of the consortium, although I have no idea of how much and if IBM/Toshiba have a greater share of the Cell business than Sony.

Is anyone using it in a mass produced product?  Or are you just pointing out that some scientists are using it for experimental purposes?  I have yet to see a product on shelves that uses the cell other then the PS3.  Do you have a link I can look at?  I'm curious as to who would benefit at all from going with the Cell now that it's not going to see the massive price reductions the PS3 could have afforded it.

Blu-ray and the CELL are huge......
That alone will pay all the costs....
You guys forget that CEll is new and can be palced in nearly all modern electronic products especially now when electronic products have coem so complicated.

Sony is selling all their chip production facilities. If the cell is all that, it's Toshiba and IBM that are going to make the bulk of the profits.

PS4 specs.

2 8cell clusters. All rendering done on cells.  Same old-school memory system, just a little newer and faster.

I just designed it for sony. That was hard.

Not that I know of. The closest thing which is known right now would be IBM blade servers I guess? I was just saying that it's possible for Sony to get some money (revenue, not necessarily profit) from the Cell, not that it's definitely happening.

i hope all 3 stay in the war, its great to have this competition

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

They announced it but somehow the sale did not get a green light

The latest thing I read is indeed the sale of it and a joint venture

THey will be the buyers and also the sellers

Blu-ray is in the lead and can't be the loser now.
They have leaped from loss to a mayor lead.
In Europe people favor Blu-ray.

Sony's shares are rising every quarter. They have a huge surplus of a couple of billion euro's
Bravia's are selling like hotcakes. In a few years OLeD will sell like hotcakes to...cuz I'm getting me one in a few years.

Yes PS4 will come ... BELIEVE

No, the cell will never be used for anything other then the PS3 for Sony. It makes no sense to use it. The cpu is too hard to program for to be used in a cheap device. Simple X86 embbeded, ARM and PPC will be used however. Sony is making this clear by selling off their stake in their manufacturing plant. If Sony was going to use the Cell cpu in every one of it's divisions it wouldn't be selling off it's plant. It all comes down to costs...

Also the Cell processor is too specific at what it does. You need a robust solution for embedded cpu's if you plan on cutting costs across lines. Why spend 100$+ on a Cell cpu when a 4$ ARM cpu can do many of the same things? The Cell cpu requires very optimized code to be efficient. The ARM on the other hand doesn't.

Don't forget Graphics cards for the Video Industry(Apple has a video card with multiple CELLs)

They are selling because they need cash. They also sold some stock to gather cash (2,5billion orso)

Is it really clear or are they not capable right now to focuse on the CELL becoz of the PS3 and OLED ?
