Forums - Gaming - Why is Sonic still so popular?

Sonic Rush was awesome!

And I'm going to rent Sonic and the Secret Rings fairly soon. It looked fun.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

He's not that popular...

Whatever popularity he has is for kids with a short attention span and older gamers that played the actually good Sonic games.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

@BenKenobi88

No your wrong he is not popular now. But he was popular in the Genesis days. Thats what made the Genesis sell well.

He's still alive because when people buy the games they know what they're gonna get: a fast paced platformer, why risk your money on a £30-£50 game that you've never heard of when you can spend the money on a Sonic game and know that generally it's going to be an OK game.

He is rapidly declining in popularity (as is evidenced by the lackluster sales of Sonic Rush Adventure) BUT I think that Mario and Sonic at the Olympics will prop up the series and sell at least 1 million worldwide.

Sonic is very popular in the U.K. Sony games always seem to find a place in the charts.

Heeeeyyyy!!!! <Snap>

Here's a big reason... the music of Sonic games are class... even today i still find myself listening to retro sonic tunes... star light zone from sonic 1, oil ocean zone from sonic 2, hydrocity from sonic 3 and mushroom hill zone from sonic 4... these are still great, as are some of the modern stuff like sky deck part 2 in sonic adventure1 ... who agrees with me...

Why not add me on msn... ish_187@hotmail.co.uk

Sonic the Hedgehog was a legend back in the SNES/Genesis days.

He was the Sega flagship character and he was on par with Mario despite being far younger.

I can't even count the number of Sonic vs. Mario articles you saw in magazines pitting one icon against the other because he was Mario's nemesis back in the day.

Finally, if Nintendo and Sega had swapped characters, it would be Sonic that would be plastered all over games today instead of Mario, true story (Paper Sonic, Tail's Mansion, Sonic Strikers Charged...).

I enjoyed Sonic Rush quite a bit but Sonic Rush Adventure left me with a bad taste in my mouth. The mini-games were annoying and tore you out of what you want from Sonic; speed, speed, and more speed. It was also a little too easy for my liking.

Overall though, the DS games are worth a look if you're into Sonic.
