Forums - Nintendo - I'm thinking of getting Dragon Quest V...

The only other Dragon Quest I've ever played (and also completed) is Dragon Quest VIII, and I thought it was a great deal of fun. Now I've heard that the DS remakes of Dragon Quest are pretty fun, and I've also heard from lots of sources that Dragon Quest V is the most epic and amazing of the entire series. Is it really? Do you think it's worth for me to get it? And while on the subject, what about Dragon Quest IV? Would you recommend it to me, and if so, to play before or after V?

I think Dragon Quest V is better than Dragon Quest IV. The story in DQ5 is a lot more endearing as are the characters. The game does a great job of taking you through the main character's life. My only complaint is that you don't get much freedom to go where or do what you like early on. Of course that changes later. Monster catching in DQ5 is also pretty cool as well. Having a team of the MC, a metal slime, a regular slime, and a slime knight is neat.

Dragon Quest IV was pretty neat with its "chapters" but while I kept wanting to get back to the main character during the first few, the game kept making me play as character after character that I wasn't always interested in. I also didn't like the final boss. The motivation of the boss just wasn't developed enough so the end felt kind of anticlimactic.  Oh yeah, and Dragon Quest IV was fairly short.  I beat it in 11 hours.  There was only one part of the game where I was confused about where to go.  For most of it, the game basically told you where to go next or for one reason or another it was obvious.

IV, V and VI is the "Zeniphia" trilogy. I think you should buy IV first just to follow the trilogy, but for me the best DQ game is V. Dragon Quest IV isn't "excellent" but it's worth buying for sure, I had a lot of fun with it.

Oh, I see, so those three games are actually connected? If so, I'd feel obligated to get all three.

Yes!

I,II and III - Trilogy of Erdrick (or Loto on Japan). Loto is the hero in the first three games, in fact, "Loto" is a title (not a real name). The chronological order of the first three games is III, I and II.

IV. V and VI- Trilogy of Zenith Castle (or Zenithia). Zenith is the sky castle from the trilogy. All the three games are connected with several elements (not just the castle, there are some events, but I can't say because it will be a spoiler).

I see! That sounds very interesting indeed. I guess I'll start off with IV then and look forward to the masterpiece that I've heard V is. Thanks a lot to both Hisiru and Words of Wisdom :)
