Forums - General - I'm a little confused about the health care reform bill.

So if I'm understaning this right, insurance will become mandatory for everybody, and it's the person's choice whether they will choose to pay for private insurance, or get government insurnace and pay a fee for it, correct?

Why don't they just take the government health care that already exists (Medicaid) and expand it?

I've been looking for a place to gather pure facts, and so far I have only found partisan yapping from both sides. :P

If you want unbiased information then I'm definitely not the one to ask as I'm pro national health. But if you like here is a link that may help.

http://www.healthreform.gov/

I'm actually also pro.

But I'm just looking for the facts before I decide whether or not I'll be supporting Obama's new bill.

Well, its not a final bill yet, so you can't really say anything definitive about it.

None of the versions of the bill I have seen, and someone correct me if I am wrong, have a mandate that people must have health insurance.

There are different provisions in the versions that sort of reach this conclusion, like instituting a payroll tax on employers who don't provide coverage for their employees. I am not sure what the $ amount on salaries is that would require them to provide coverage for that employee.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

So, according to Obama, if this is instated, then it would ultimately end up being cheaper than the current system, and it would also give the option for private insurance.

I don't understand the downside to this.

I really don't think a webpage designed by the current governmental regime is going to be the best place for unbiased facts about a massive healthcare bill.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Because medicaid largely sucks.... and the AMA would revolt if they extended medicaid to anyone.

It probably isn't, but I've done as much research as I care to.

Unfortunately, the scope of the bill is such that I do not have the attention span to read it. :P

They need a tl;dr version.

Nobody believes Obama.

I mean this bill is currently being held up by the "Blue Dog" Democrats because there are no real price controls in place.

Most people expect it to explode healthcare costs.

Blue Dog Democrats being democrats who are for Fiscal Responsibility.

By nobody you mean everyone that isn't a democrat, yeah?

So, what would you do to fix health care, Kaz?
