Epic: No more retail Unreal Tournament releases 'for several years'

Epic Games CEO and founder, Tim Sweeney, recently chatted with G4 about the upcoming Dark Corners content for Gears of War 2. Yeah, been there, done that. Sweeney did, however, mention something interesting regarding the future of our favorite fragfest, Unreal Tournament.

"Unreal Tournament is certainly a major long-term priority but we're planning not to release a major retail game in the series for several years," Sweeney said. He commented that this move was to aid the company in focusing on "a few other initiatives." We're placing our bets on some kind of downloadable release (a smart move since the interest in downloadable FPS games is certainly there), especially since Sweeney took care to only mention retail.

They dont need to, because Gears of War basically is Unreal Tournament with a 3rd person view and a cover system.

Thank god..unreal was a shadow of it's former self anyway. That used to be one of my favorite games ever until the past few years.

but they dropped the ball with UT3, now they are just giving up.

Ahh to bad, UT3 was terrible. They will make a new IP other than Gears of War.

Dont think their gonna drop UT franchise at all....I think their just going to lay low with this IP for a while.

They "lost" the Unreal Tournament franchise because they forgot their roots. I don't have pitty for them.

what ashame i loved UT3 eventhough i dont have xbox livebut as far as i know gears of war doesnt have bots or local multiplayer so i will have to stay with UT3
