Forums - Sales - Microsoft Entertainment Posts $130 million Loss in Q4 2009 : is the 360 in trouble ?

MSFT stock is already down sharply actually (7%) in after hours market. Analysts are slaughtering it.

But yes, the xbox 360 is a minor business for MS, they could stop it any day if they need money.

The problem they have is their core business doesn't work well anymore either.

- Windows Vista failed and people don't want to 'upgrade' to Windows 7 either... The PC market is in deep recession, it doesn't help.
- Office looses market share to Open Office (even my state owned company replaced Office by Open Office...)
- Zune is losing to Ipod
- Internet Explorer is killed by Firefox and Safari month after month.
- On the net, Google completely destroys MS.

All in all, MS looks more and more like a fallen giant. It's now clearly heading south.

Um, Microsoft isn't going anywhere.

$4 Billion is lot of profit, which Sony can only dream of right now.. Sony wont be making $4Billion profit anytime soon.. so i dont think MS will be much worried... making $4billion in terrrible economic times is not bad at all, rather its very good.

Sony's gaming losses will be buried in a much bigger division now. Good luck deciphering them.

Yup, bundled with divisions like Sony Ericcson afaik *shivers*

Guess we'll find out next week, won't we?

Microsoft is doomed thread, unfortunately it does not work when you still count your profit in billions.

Windows 7 will be huge and Microsoft can expect a huge bounce in profit through this product alone.
Office 2007 is about to be replaced by 2010 so again expect more profit admittedly it does have more competition but Office 2007 and 2010 are much better products than OpenOffice.
Zune is still being heavily developed and it success or failure are far from certain.
IE 8 has stemmed the flow currently but the European adoption of a non browser version of Windows 7 will see that eroded certainly in Europe. Although currently I would recommend you install IE 8 as you still need a Microsoft browser in your product and you need to patch then the installed version plus your extra web browsers which I bet most of you do not.
Microsoft are actually improving on its search capabilities and Bing has reported some good uptake.

All in all I expect Microsoft to post some impressive results in 2010 due to this being a big software year. 2009 is at the end of lost of the software products so a dip is to be expected.

Kinect as seen by PS3 owners ...if you can pick at it   ...post it ... Did I mention the 360 was black and Shinny? Keeping Sigs obscure since 2007, Passed by the Sig police 5July10.

Great news, more losses are needed tho. Well, I am waiting to see in what kind of trouble sony really is. Hopefully they will post even greater losses. They will deserve it too.

Do you mean that Microsoft Entertainment, Sony as a whole, Sony entertainment, or the Playstation brand deserves losses?

Whichever you meant, that's a pretty douche thing to say and I hope you don't mean it.

MS isn't doomed, but it is weakening. This quarterly decline only tells half the story, the other half is that a lot of Microsoft's enemies are growing stronger. Sony is pretty much the only rival Microsoft is beating right now, and even that victory is marginal considering Nintendo's dominance in the console space.

Apple and Google are seeing their profits rise strongly in spite of the downturn. They've all but pushed Windows out of the smartphone arena, and Apple has been slowly, but steadily, eroding Microsoft's consumer PC market while Linux applies pressure in the server market. MS did manage to fend off the threat of Linux-based netbooks by slashing their margins on Windows for netbooks, but now here comes Google with a new OS to threaten that space all over again and who knows what else besides.

Microsoft is besieged on so many fronts, it's no surprise that their dominance is waning. None of their recent attempts to break into new markets have been resounding successes, so it's more of a question of what territory Microsoft will hold rather than what it will gain.

Both, as long as they are in charge games will be like hollywood movies. Sequels after sequels with nothing new and terrible mass products that are trying to please everyone. Nintendo is doing it right, but I don't care about nintendo and its games. However they are making something differently and thats what matters. (No, I don't own wii or any other console and maybe never will if this crap continues.)

Not in trouble considering how deep MS's pockets are. It's never a good thing when a company loses money :(

As much as I hate MS, I don't want them to lose money.
