Anyway, if the 40gb succeeds, which it might, Sony will sell more consoles. Chances are that the PS4 won't have much in the ways of b/w compatability, I think that Sony might turn it into a bit of a virtual console like on the Wii. People have to rebuy all the consoles, and possibly a special controller, it'd be win win for Sony.
But that's only if the PS4 doesn't have a physical media drive (which I believe it will) if it does, I dunno, I think it will work like the 80gb models work, software emulation - not top priority for Sony, just adding support for more games with each firmware upgrade.
