Forums - General - Belief in the Bible Makes Poor People in the US Stupid!

I'm watching FOX News this afternoon, and they are talking about Obama's speach last night and growing support against his healthcare plan in the USA.  Now, for there to be growing support against receiving universal healthcare in the US, that means that a good many people would have to be saying they don't want healthcare even amongst people that can't afford healthcare.

And, I believe that this could very well be true.  However, it doesn't answer the question of why there would be growing support from most of the people in this country that don't have healthcare to not have healthcare.  What would be responsible for such a thing and for causing many Americans that can't afford insurance to decide that they they don't care if they will get quality healthcare if they get sick or injured?

I see one major culprit:  The Bible.  Most poor people in the USA are fundamentalist Christians and they believe whatever bs they think the Bible tells them or whatever their holy roller preachers tell them on Sunday.  Deep down they feel like they don't deserve anything more than they have in life due to their belief in The Bible.  If you asked most of these people "Don't you want to have quality healthcare?" most of them will say in their most Gomer Pyle sounding voice, "No, I don't want high quality healthcare.  If God wanted me to have quality healthcare, then he would have provided it, so I don't care for it."  It is such a stupid thing to place so much faith in a being whom the best scientific evidence would show has no basis in reality whatsoever but most of the poor in the US (poor mainly because they're uneducated -- prime candidates for Biblical belief even in the early 21st Century) do so.

Well, I'm an educated poor person in America.  I have worked at a low paying job in the US, gotten sick, and tried to pay for my medical procedure with the health insurance that I was paying $20.00 a week for out of my paycheck for and been unable to have my medical treatment fully covered.  The only way to have received better healthcare would have been to have even paid more money for a higher company insurance plan but that would have taken even more money out of my weekly paycheck while leaving me even less money from my paycheck to pay for other things.

So as an educated poor person in the US whose beliefs are not being swayed by any 2000 year old piece of parchment that most likely has very little to do with anything important in modern times, I say I'm all for Obama's heathplan, and I personally  think I deserve to have as high a quality of medical treatment when I get sick as does Bill Gates whether some imaginary diety wants me to be able to have it or not.

I know a lot of people wont like it on this forum but i agree.

Having the beilefs from a boob written millions of years ago is bound to be outdated and hence possibly invalid. Altough if they have strong beleifs in the bible like alot of uneducated believers they might deny other possiblities and just have one choice to believe. They may consider religion their only hope in life hence they become stronger believers.

There is a link between belief in relgion and education levels. And this divide is getting larger.

^thousands of years ago.

Anyway, maybe people won't support his universal health care plan because universal health care is possibly the worst form of health care on this entire planet?

Ask the Europeans.

This wont make me popular, in fact this post may get me banned :-/

It's not the religions fault at all, all Christianity teaches is its version of morality at the end of the day. But it is more about the politics that comes with it. Religion seems to hold a lot of political power for some reason in the USA, it can swing whole elections. If that happened in the UK their would be a massive outrage. You often find USA Christians are heavily conservative and this seems to go hand in hand with the religion. Honestly, I can't remember the last Republican I spoke to who wasn't a Christian and so they seem to intertwine conservative beliefs with Christian ones.

And so opposing something as obviously beneficial as a national healthcare system is something that is heavily 'co-incidental' with Christianity, not because it is Christian but because it is conservative. Try and find me a conservative Christian who also doesn't oppose gay marriage or abortion. Opposing national healthcare is just one policy amongst thousands of policies that US Christians seem to hold due to the inherent conservatism.

What I'm trying to say is that where you find Christianity in the USA you will also find conservative values. It's all a messy mix of religion and politics lol.

So you blame the unwillingness for some of the poorer families in the United States to accept socialized health care on the Bible?

You must be kidding.

i am European.

Thousands of years ago is a long time, did you know that in developed humain countries they use to chop peoples heads off? Well that was only 100 years ago in Europe? They also use to discriminate against women, they use to be house bound because people believed/interpreted things differently from the bible. Good thing my continent has moved on from such barabric/disciminatery ways...

Well, both me and football fan are Europeans so I think we have a good idea of what people think here. Our National health service is F*ing brilliant, I love having it, such a great facility. I can't think of a single person I know who has ever genuinely complained about the NHS, it's a great system.

That may be the most incendiary thread title in the history of these forums. Good job.

lol, no you're blaming Europe chopping people's heads off 100 years ago because of the Bible! That's too funny.

Islam is now the dominant religion in Europe and has been for quite some time.

It's not even dissing a major system or game.  I see it at 5 pages max, 10 if it's really lucky.
