Epic boss Mark Rein sat down with VG247 at Develop in Brighton, England last week to chat about the firm’s Unreal Engine. Rein revealed that the engine behind APB (and many others) is due for an update and the new features “will blow people away.”

“It’s a very mature engine and we’re adding great new features every year,” said Rein.

“I just saw some incredible new stuff that we’re either later this year or next year for new engine features and I think they’re really going to blow people away.”

Rein said earlier that if they a had an engine incremental numeration system, “we’d be at about 3.8 right now.”

What is it with this sig. You do realise it is over 2mb of crud embedded in your Sig. Leo did you put him up to this you little Minx.

They've been saying that for a decade. Still, maybe this time its true?
Don't get me wrong, the Unreal engine has always been very good but it never stood head and shoulders above others.

I find myself cautious on this. On PC I'd be more optimistic as the specification base was a moving target, and engines could be updated to take advantage of more power/features.

But the consoles are fixed specification, and unless Epic are willing to take the engine (or at least some features) out of the support of current consoles and make them PC only anything they add has to work on current PS3/360 - and that makes me find it hard to believe they've added something that's going to blow me away which will still work fine with current consoles.

Still, I'll wait until I see what they show. Hopefully they've further optimized performance, which would allow more out of the same specs of course.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Oh sorry. As for Leo no he didn't. I was the first one to put this sig actually I had 3 different uncharted GIF. Someone complain and remove the other 2.

I was disappointed by the UT3 engine... the colors were just too dark for my liking. And there wasn't a UNIQUE feel to it like the first Unreal tournament.

That has far more to do with the artstyle of the games produced than it has to do with the engine itself ...

Yup.  Mirror's Edge actually had my favourite art style of Unreal Engine based games this gen so far, and is far from dark with regards to colour!

For the most part the problem seems to be too many Unreal based titles are from studios copying existing popular styles rather than being overly creative themselves.

Well then the art style should change =.=

they must be feeling the heat from id Tech 5

Open world, large geometry and Impressive visuals all at 60FPS now that's how you build an engine. Thank you Mr.Carmack

Yes, finally an id engine that took a step into the future of gaming: by truly supporting open world. <3
