Forums - Gaming - who determines next gen?

in many posts people speculate when the next gen of consoles will be released or

who will be the first , and i wonder who is actually in charge of when the next gen begins.

with the ps3 and 360's specs so close to each other it allows for multiplat developing

will developers be happy or supportive if one of these 2 consoles suddenly decide to

put out a new console? what good will it be to try to get a jump on your competitors if the

developers refuse to support the console youd be limited to first party exclusives only

The next gen begins when Sony says so.

I also think they will launch first.

Nintendo will be the first to release a 8th generation console I think.

From what I have seen Natal and the PS Eye Dildo thing (Don't even know the official name) will be better than what the Wii has to offer.

All the Wii will become is a 6th generation graphics console with fan favorite first party exclusives with basic motion functions compared to the competition. The Wii's lifecycle won't be as long as the Xbox 360 or the Playstation 3. Nintendo will have to release a HD console eventually unless they keep coming out with more gimmicks that consumers lap up.

I think the Wii 2 will have specs on par with the Xbox 360 (which would be low from a 8th generation console) to keep production costs down and feature more advanced motion controls than the Wii. Why change your plans to much from the previous generation when you know they work.

lol if you believe that, you're seriously mistakened

Mr. T decides cause he pities the foo who makes him by a console too early. That's what my mom told me.

Usually the weakest of the current gen launches the next gen first.. sega launches saturn first, dreamcast first, MS launches 360 first. So my money is going with SONY on this one.

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

owner of : atari 2600, commodore 64, NES,gameboy,atari lynx, genesis, saturn,neogeo,DC,PS2,GC,X360, Wii

5 THINGS I'd like to see before i knock out:

a. a AAA 3D sonic title

b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"

c. redesgined PS controller

d. SEGA back in the console business

e. M$ out of the OS business

To me the next gen "Officially" Begins when all competitors have reached the stage.

Basically when Sony Says so...PERSONA

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

A new generation begins when a few important criteria are met. A new console is launched. That console is a major leap in hardware capabilities. That console generates enough sales to be a successful platform. These are all that is needed. The first one is really obvious the other two not so much. A failure on either front means the console will be of the previous generation.

Once that console is cemented it is then determined that its launch date marks the beginning of a generation. Everyone being at the party is not a requirement, and you do not even have to wait for the last player to show. This generation started with the launch of the 360. That is not the same as the war began in earnest, but that isn't what a generation is about. It is about separating one group of hardware and software from another.
