StarTropics is definitely one of the best games on NES, and one of the few good games we got in the US that Japan did not get!  Definitely go for it if you haven't played through it.  There is also a StarTropics II, which is an excellent game as well, with improved controls, but I didn't like the setting as much.  Still a lot of fun.  Landstalker is another great pick.

Tales of Veseria.

I bought my 360 when it released, because the reviews and stuff interested me, and almost a year later, I still haven't beaten it because I don't want it to end. :-/ I do that with RPGs a lot, heh. FF4 took me a year to beat, and I've been playing FF6 for almost 10 years without beating it, 2.5 years on my current save (I'm on the World of Ruin!).

Also, I should mention Resistance Retribution. IMHO, it's the best PSP game, and one of the best handheld games I've ever played. It got decent reviews, but sales are pretty miserable. Dunno if that's piracy or just a lack of interest.
