Worse, Edwards quoted the "over $1mil spent in the opening month" statement, and an excited reporter asked how much it has made since, or if it's maintained that momentum, and Edwards said that information is unavailable. He also answered a question about "how many people are online at anygiven time" by saying that there is "no way of knowing those numbers, but thousands."

I don't know, but it seems to be doing well enough for Sony to maintain it...Doesn't take that much for Sony to maintain a dozen servers worldwide and paying some devs and admins. Besides, a lot of developments are done by publishers themselves.

My biggest complaint with Home is that there is no in game currency. You have to spend money from the real world to buy anything. This disrupts the immersion.

Moreso than the interface for communication? Or the actual appearance of the avatar? Or the loading?
That said, an "in game currency" purchased with real money is a key to success there. "$1.65" for a t-shirt seems a lot different than "1sp" (1 Sony Point), and you will move more merchandise that way.

so the only reason MS sells so much stuff is the gamerpoints system?
