No... I still think Goldeneye is THE best FPS but Halo is not too far along with Half-Life 2 and CoD4.

GoldenEye is outdated and hasn't aged well at all, the controls are stiff and clunky compared to Halo.

Half-Life 2 is better than Halo but COD4 is WAY inferior, it's just a shallow shooting gallery with 100% scripted A.I. and has no replay value in the single-player. Playing on multiple difficulty settings just makes COD4 tedious and frustrating than challenging. Not to mention the multiplayer is unbalanced and takes no skill to play unlike Halo CE.

You have to consider the impact the game had when it came out. Goldeneye was so innovative for it's time.

I actually highly disagree with you about the replay value of the single player in Cod4. It's one of the most engaging and challenging FPS experience I ever had.

I agree with what uadfa said about COD4...about it being slightly repettitive...and scripted. I mean...howmany times can they give you the "get rocket launcher and destroy tank to move on" task.

But I do agree with you that the sheer tension of that game puts it on the best FPS games list. It just lacks the freedom games like Halo and HL offer.

I don't know how playing in COD4 on veteran and being on your knees to pray you're not spammed by grenades from every angle every time you play counts as being challenging.

I will say this: I loved every moment of co-op with my friend/bro, playing in the same room on the same TV.

It was as fun as playing GoldenEye and Perfect Dark's multiplayer a few years before that.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

THANK YOU.  I can't stand the praise for CoD4, while still a good game it doesn't require much skill thanks to auto-aim even on the Halo games I'd die a few times on normal difficulty settings (unlike CoD4).

Well I think the first two COD games deserve more praise than COD4.

Half-life 2 episode 2 is probably the strongest single player FPS I've ever played.

In regards to multiplayer halo 3 is my most played FPS ever.

If I had to say whats the best fps I've ever played that title would go to deus-ex.

It seem like people forget Halo:CE was released in 2001. Its older than CoD and Half Life 2. It was light years ahead of anything before it, it is better than many FPS games years after it, and it still holds up great 8 years later. Like other truly great games Halo:CE will still be great for many years to come. Halo:CE is the Doom of this era in my opinion.

Nah it's the Marathon of this era. :P

I don't know about the very best, but the first one was pretty fun.

The PC port of the first game wasn't that great to be honest. Sure, it was Halo, but I didn't find myself caring that much. It also has online, but what kills it in my opinion is that there's a delay for all your actions and when they'll be registered. In a way, it reminds me of playing an RTS online where if you issue an order, it'll take a moment for the order to go through. It's similar in Halo, you have to aim infront of a moving target to hit him.

Neither Golden Eye nor Halo is the best FPS game ever. Both are easily inferior to just about everything on the market today.
