Forums - Sales - Why is it so hard to have a rational discussion?

Why is it that when ever anyone on this site provides a rational argument with facts and well thought out arguments to defend a point it either is totally ignored or some trivial mistake or gap is attacked while all the valid logic and information is ignored?

This behavior appears to cross the console lines, so I am not picking on one fan base here.

So any theories from the rational people out there or any explanation from the offenders? Are people just poor at debate? Are the rational arguments to complex for you? Are you just immature and can't handle objective rational discourse?

From what I have seen my vote is the all of the above for most.

For a great current example of what I am talking about look here.

Because noone likes to concede a point in a discussion. If people conceded points the whole process would actually work quite smoothly.

Tease.

Fire is fun to play with.

Ok, don't concede but instead why not come up with their reasoning and facts defnding their point?

Is it just too much work? When ever I see a good solid argument laid out the result is usually either the thread ends in silence, the personal attacks come out, or it is ignored.

I really wonder how these people get along in the real world. When you call your insurance agent to discuss why they are not covering a medical bill this sort of behavior is not going to get you far. Or better yet when you go on a job interview.

In all seriousness I often get better discussions out of my 3 year old.

Fanboys will be Fanboys?

I actually just developed a new theory. The people that are rational for the most part see the discussion that go on and just don't bother posting because they know it is a waste of time. That leaves you with a few dedicated rational people fighting a tide of blind fanboys that say the same thing no matter what the topic is or what anyone else has said.

Wow, this reminds me of US presidential debates actually. Scary thought on so many levels.

Well, this is the Internetz. Wanting everyone to behave and use facts may be to much to ask for.

Welcome to the internet, sir!

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."
