Hawk (great name by the way)

I have a feeling that Sony isn't 'giving up" on having BC in their consoles. I think they are close to having BC without hardware and full software emulation. Could be that they can get it to work for maybe 20-30% of games, maybe less, but probably not much more, so they don't want to get people's hopes up if they cannot get it working in a rather fast time frame.

That is my belief in what is going on, and someday, I'll have to remind people of the posts I made when I said this.

I don't think I would count on them tryting to emulate the GS chip in the future.  Sony has been pretty clear in their press releases even when they DID have backward compatibility that they are focusing their resources on moving forward with the PS3 platform.  This particular announcement makes it pretty clear they aren't planning on it and where their priorities are

Sony may just continue to press the price down and have 2 skus going on  -- one with and one without BC...

Great offer for people who own a PS2. Sony tries to win former supporters once again. It's a huge  multitude. Personally I would buy this model without hesitation. It will be a hit here in Poland. 1599 zł for 40gb and new lower price for 60 gb - 1999 zł. In march PS3 cost 2399 zł. This is the most important decision of this year. It gives to PS3 an opportunity to face X360. Obviously 40 gb PS3 offers much more than premium X. It would be a great deal for people who want HD player too.

Another brief spike in PS3 sales?
