The other reason this is a stupid move:

There are 100+ million people out there who own a PS2 and have PS2 games. Lack of backwards compatibility is one more reason for them to choose the 360 or Wii over the PS3.

care to explain cause what your claiming doesnt make sense. if they bought a wii or an xbox360 they still wouldnt be able to play their ps2 games.

That's exactly my point!  The PS3 is at the same level as the 360 and Wii: unable to play their PS2 games.

With backwards compatibility, the PS3 has the advantage of being the natural new console choice for PS2 owners.

Without backwards compatibility, the PS3 is still way more expensive than the Wii, and doesn't have as many games as the 360.

so you would prefer sony do nothing? if people wanted to buy PS3 with BC they shoulda gotten one already, but no those people you are talking about didnt. personally i like their move, it gives more options for the consumers.
399 is an attractive pricepoint for the ps3.

plus the 60gb one looks really good right now. for just a 100 more you get BC, a game, an extra controller and 20gb extra HD sapce.

What is a harcore or avid gamer? You originally made your choice of PS3 model because you wanted the EE chip, right? Are you an avid gamer?

Someone like you and I.  Someone who loves video games enough to play several hours a week.  Someone who follows video game news on a daily/weekly basis and tries to be in the know.  Someone who is well aware of sales and games coming out that may not be huge titles.   I made my choice on a PS3 because I knew that Socom Confrontation was slated for later this year/ early next year.  I knew I was going to buy it, it was just a matter of when.

I follow gaming news quite a bit, so I would be an avid and hardcore gamer.   The EE chip was just a bonus, even though I really don't play many PS2 games on my system or really have a need to play them.

My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.

So why would they need BC? The only reason people complain about this is because having BC is convenient and they won't have so many consoles in their living room.

Did you just ask a question and then immediately answer it?

There's also the fact that PS2s have a shoddy lifespan. I need BC just for the security.

Yea... my launch PS2 is still running as good as the day I bought it.   I guess you can call a piece of electronics that lasts 7 years shoddy. :P

I'm on my 3rd PS2.  And the security is another piece that matters to me.  From what I've heard, the PS3 is a very reliable piece of equipment.  I hope in the future, there are still BC PS3s in the US when the PS3 is at a price I find worth buying.

Hawk (great name by the way)

I have a feeling that Sony isn't 'giving up" on having BC in their consoles. I think they are close to having BC without hardware and full software emulation. Could be that they can get it to work for maybe 20-30% of games, maybe less, but probably not much more, so they don't want to get people's hopes up if they cannot get it working in a rather fast time frame.

That is my belief in what is going on, and someday, I'll have to remind people of the posts I made when I said this.

.. the PS2 is pretty cheap.. maybe $50 usd used at EB... whats the problem? who cares about BC. Also there has to be over 100 million working PS2s by now. Most people should still own one.

Thanks.  And I hope so.  Makes sense.

Maybe I'm strange, but has anyone else noticed that the PS3 fans who bashed Nintendo for not including DVD playback with comments like "Who wants to have both a game console and a DVD player in their entertainment center" and also were critical of the XBox 360's weak Backwards compatibility are now the ones claiming that it is no big deal to have 2 consoles under your TV and Backwards compatibility is a small deal?

 Yep. Spot on.

I've already talked to those people. They are all getting a Wii for Christmas after playing Bowling and Tennis over at my house. Another is getting one for himself, his sister and his mother. At least half of them will get WiiFit as soon as it comes out. These people knew nothing about the videogames except they had heard about the Wii (Television/Newspapers). One of them played Super Mario Bros. on the Virtual Console and I think that's what sealed the deal for him. The kids could play WiiSports and he could try and finish Mario after a 20 year time out.
