i like both, i have been playing MGS4 this week and it has been great experience just because of the story, and then there are games like mario kart wii and super mario galaxy, no story or basic story but you will forget about the story because of the great gameplay.
it all depends on the game, i expect a great story from an RPG and no story from a game like tetris
Gameplay oriented. Games can have good stories but that doesn't help that I often feel detached from scenario the game is trying to present because I'm not in full control of the character. In most games, in my opinion, the least amount of story the better.
Role-Playing games often make me cringe because of this. You assume the role of _______ and if _______ does something that doesn't agree with your morales or does something that otherwise feels like your common sense is being ignored, the detachment sets in and I don't feel like I'm playing a game anymore but watching an interactive, pixelated movie.
Also cutscenes often make me feel like I'm a seperate entity from the game and the immersion is lost. Immersion is very important to me and once that's broken, I seldom ever feel like playing a game thru. There are some exceptions but they're rarely done in a way that holds my attention.
I like silent heroes, your Cronos, Freemans, Links, because they're much easier to project yourself to.
Finally, in my opinion, the most important qualities in games include pacing, controls, stability throughout, and fun gameplay. Most of which aren't affected directly by a story. Pacing does but it's often not in a way I like.
Pixel Art can be fun.
Of course i like both, but the story is main factor if its really good i can learn to like
(or end up loving) the ""bad"" gameplay.
Best example for me would be Manga Carta i loved the story so much that i ended up loving the
gameplay (which was bad at the beginning)

I mean Xenosaga is great because of breath-taking plot and scenes, but in first one gameplay is so TERRIBLE. I had pirated copy that was trash(pirate never works right with me) and i'm buying all three games to finish and i'm playing for plot, artwork and Database not gameplay(wich is really improved in 3rd one).
I really like Devil May Cry because of gameplay, plot is okay, but is secondary. Uncharted also is an example of game I play for gameplay. It all depends if the game have at least one of the factor good enough to make you go on playing.
