The first horror R rated horror film that I ever saw was Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street starring Robert Englund and Heather Langenkamp which I saw at my local drive-in back in the days when I was in the 5th grade and Drive-Ins still existed. I thought at the time and still think it was one of the best horror films ever made and that Englund was an incredible actor. Back in the day, many us of probably wouldn't have admitted it, but if we could have been one of the cinematic boogeymen of the time we certainly would have picked to be Fred Krueger and to have finger knives of our own. In many ways he was the Fonzie of horror and a character that brought wit back to the horror / slasher genre.
It recently came to my attention that they were going to be remaking A Nightmare on Elm Street (I thought it was supposed to be a Summer 2009 film however), and that it is slated for a 2010 release. I just found out that Robert Englund won't be reprising the role of Freddy Krueger in the Elm Street revisioning, but that Jackie Earle Haley Rorschock in The Watchmen film (which I haven't seen yet) will be taking over the part.
Do you think Haley will do an admirable job as Freddy in the new Elm Street or do you think they should have kept Robert Englund in the role that he made famous?
