Is it that fartetched? From the 7 millions figure, 4.8 of those were for the PS360, according to VGChartz and a bit of estimation. Even if we include 200k from the PS360 copies that are on shelves, it would still leave a couple of millions for the PC version.
Now, A Best-selling PC game sells 2 millions in a few select countries in less than 2 months. While eastern european countries, scandinavian countries, Russia, South Korea, etc.. aren't as big as UK or USA, they are still alot, and their markets are entirely dominated by PC. Didn't you know that the Stalker game sold like 1 million in the easter european countries alone??!! But you are also forgetting the biggest market, which was bigger than 2/3 the size of the Retail market at the time: Digital Distribution - COD4 stayed for months as the top seller on Steam and D2D, and even now it still shows up in the top sellers list on Steam and Impulse.
Why don't you compare COD4 with, let's say Starcraft? It took 9 months for SC1 to sell 1.5 millions, while COD4 sold more in less than a fifth of the time.
Or better yet, compare it to Sims 2, which is probably close to 20 millions sold by now. COD4 was selling better than WoW and Sims 2 in the first few months, then sold at the same pace on retail, but unlike those two, COD4 was also selling on Digital Distribution (and kicking ass there).
I hear people say COD4 could've only sold 2-3 millions on PC. Then I ask this: Then how did Stalker, a game that NEVER appeared in a european retail and a couple times on digital PC charts sell over 2 millions? How did The Witcher, which NEVER appeared in ANY retail chart, and once or twice on digital charts sell over 1 million? Those games were nowhere near what COD4 did. Infact, not even WoW and Sims 2 were on the same level as COD4 in it's first year.

BTW, jagged gave you a couple of links in a previous thread that disproved your little theory here. DD as a cheap distribution model is great, but i don't think it acounts for as much sales as you think it does. Just because you download a lot of stuff doesn't mean the rest of thw world has your same mentality.
Also, Cod4 doesn't have the asian appeal of games like wow and starcraft and that is why it won't have the legs. However, on the consoles, I know it is pretty consistently in the top 20 in npd numbers even to this day. So we know it has legs on the consoles:) |
You don't need the asian market to have legs...
