Forums - Nintendo - WiiConnect24 ON, or disc out?

When I have Wiiconnect24 on and I have a disc in my drive, the disc gets really hot as though I'm playing the game, but the console is actually powered off. I hate to know that when i come on after my wii had a good nights rest, the dam thing seems to be working overtime. I'm worried because this past year my drive is starting to make a bit more noise and I would not like it to do any unnecessary work.

I would like to have it on because of the Nintendo & Everybody Votes channel.

Is this a common occurrence when WC24 is on?

Around the Network

Yes, when WC24 is on, it keeps the WiFi on, but never tuns on the fan, so the system slowly gets hot. I personally don't think it is a problem, because the system is only using like 7w, and most electronics can dissipate that much heat with little problems. The disc noise is probably caused by failure not induced from WC24 use.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

^^ do you know if the disc spins? Since i'm hearing the noise i'd like to keep use to a minimum (not talking about gameplay here)

The heating is normal with WiiConnect24 on.

The noise seems to be coming, when the drive is searching for data and moving the lens, and the amount of noise should be different in every game.

Yea, i've accepted the noise and everything, but i was just wondering if i'm going to have unnecessary disc spinning with WC24 on.

LOL. No, it's not spinning. And the spinning itself doesn't heat the disc, only the laser reading it (well, actually spinning can heat the disc, but the velocity would need to be extremely high).

Yes it is a problem when the system gets slowly hot. My graphic board was damaged because of WC24 and little black spot on the screen appeared. I sent it to Nintendo and they repaired it. A few months ago the same thing happened again (although I really payed attention to unplug it every day, but I forgot it sometimes..), but my guarantee isn't significant anymore, so I'm going to sell it to someone, because I'm not ready to pay 70 Euros for another reparation again.

Take a look at my photos on flickr

oh true, i didn't think of it like that.
Thanks for the help, i'll deal with it as it comes.

Did you pay for the repair? How old was your Wii when this happened?

dam, i didn't know that it's just the WiFi that can generate so much heat, and according to you, can lend towards damaging your parts! I think i'll turn on WC24 when i'm going to the channels that need it, and take it off after. Kinda sucky though.
