Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft's upcoming initiatives. A bunch of fail, or a bunch of win?

Yes Window mobile 7!

I am the black sheep     "of course I'm crazy, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong."-Robert Anton Wilson

Around the Network

Zune HD - i don't think it will gain marketshare, apple sony and samsung have huge shares to this make a real gainer

Silverlight 3 - flash have those features, but it's also multiplatform, i do hope flash gets better perfomance now that it have competition.

Office 2010 - its just a faceshift for 2007 not really anything ground breaking but it will sell loads due the competition it's really trying. (i am looking at you SUN and IBM).

Windows 7 - same as vista really, games get same FPS on my pcs , but sounds like improvement from "i can't run on 1gb" vista... well still needs 2gb.

Azure - didn't knew it even exist
Natal - for a launch tech it would have worked, now it's abit to little to late, when it released better be a almost perfect software. not like their vista/seven voice recognition which doesn't work... both sony and nintendo have already 1-1 recognition.

360 Update - i really hope they fix their hardware, software problems are not as huge.
Streaming music - many apps those this.

Windows mobile OS - windows mobile only have about 3% of the smartphone marketshare, nokia symbian have 40% alone it better be revolutionary if they want a bigger cake.

A lot of win if you ask me...

  • Zune HD --> pretty impressive hardware. It won't beat the iPod touch, but that would just be too much to ask for. But it could be the number 2 on the market. With the Zune marketplace available for the Xbox360 and other MP3-players as well, this thing could be good.
In a word: success, but not outstanding
  • Silverlight 3 --> I am not a designer / programmer or whatever. I just saw the demo of the streaming-tech and this was just amazing. With VoD getting bigger and bigger, this is definately something that will be big. I can see different companies that offers VoD using this tech (Amazon.com, Apple, Sony, etc) I haven't seen anything like this before. Youtube.com using this would be awesome, but that is just speculation. I have no idea how this could influence webdesigns etc. I just love the streaming-tech.
    In a word: success!
  • Office 2010 --> Well it probably will sell well, but the recession might hit MS pretty hard. Big IT-investments getting delayed by a lot of companies might be a problem. But after this recession, MS (or other IT-companies like Intel, AMD, IBM etc) will see a huge boost. The tech evolved and a lot of companies wanna catch up. That is my guess.
In a word: depending on world economy
  • Windows 7 --> Pretty much like Office 2010. But I think tons of people want to get rid off vista or finally upgrade from XP. The first impressions are awesome, so I see this doing really well
    In a word: success!
  • Azure --> No idea. Never even heard about it.
  • Natal --> At first I did not want a motion controller for the Xbox360, but the way Natal worked really made a great impression. The media picked this up like crazy and people are hyped for this. With a smart advertising campaign, I can see this be a great success.
In a word: success, if advertised well.
  • Streaming music service --> no idea, but very hard for a portable device, right? You can't stream everywhere you go?! So no idea.
  • New Xbox360 dashboard --> This is nothing HUGE, but it is quite something. MS did a good job to secure those social networks, since those are the perfect platforms to promote the Xbox360 console. Word of mouth on social networks might be full of win. Furthermore this is just a great addition for every Xbox360 owner.
    In a word: Easy success.
  • Windows Mobile --> I have to say I really love my windows mobile. It offers a lot of great things, but the bad point is, that it is poorly designed. Some things could be a lot of better with very few changes. But we do not know anything, I have no idea. MS needs to secure manufactures to use this.
In a word: No idea / depending on manufactures.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Excellent comments from everyone. No one seems to be talking about free online Office, is this not as big a deal as I think it is?

I think Microsoft has finally realized it needs to get on the right track. Windows 7 has brought the OS back on track, Zune is actually a very good player, Bing is doing well(not to mention a very good web browser, etc..

i'd say win. Natal is a cool idea.

lol, it's hard to look at that list and think of anything but "Win."

MS has sound strategy. At the very least it's "not bad." I don't think anyone would really see that list, read it, and say it was bad overall. It might not be your cup of tea...but it's not bad, lol.

I've already preordered Win7 Vista update....for 50 bucks. Win.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

It's huge, and we all have Office 2007...we just use notebad most of the time.

Excel is still the best business program ever invented though, so win.

I don't think people know much about Azure... The fact that Ms will even atempt this really makes me interested. Supporting a product like office in an online environment takes the type of infrastructure most companies can only dream of...

As a sidenote, if cloud computing like MS is trying works out of them, I think it will take a bigger chunk out of google than google will our of MS with its OS.
