Forums - Website Topics - What will be the best selling game this generation?

I thought i'd start a thread to see what everyone thinks will be the best selling game this generation and what will be the best selling game for each console (Wii, PS3 and X360).

I think it's safe to say that the best selling game for the 360 is going to be Halo 3 and many would say it will be the best selling game this generation too due to its overwhelming 1st week sales. The previous Xbox console only sold around 25 million consoles worldwide due to its poor Japan base so Halo 3 may be restricted by limited console sales. However, in saying that, the X360 is selling very well in America and everywhere else but Japan so it will surely sell more that its predecessor.

If we ignore Wii Play and Wii Sports which come bundled with the Wiimote and Wii console respectively, then i think either Smash Bros, Mario Kart or Mario Galaxy will sell best for Wii. I can't see Wii fit selling heaps due to the cost and difficulty of production of the Balance Board but i'm eager to see how it fares - i'm sure a lot of the casual gamers will purchase this. The Wii has a growing support base all over the world and many think will sell the most consoles this generation. Combine this with the long-legs the Smash Bros game will surely have and we may well see Smash Bros selling the most this gen. Third party titles? well they rarely sell well on Nintendo.

As for the PS3, well i'm going to go with GTA4 best selling on the console only because this franchise sold best last generation on the PS2 and will sell heaps on reputation alone. It's hard to say whether the PS3 will have the best selling game this gen because of its small support base and poor sales thus far. However, as the PS3 gets more 1st party titles and a few more price drops, i'm sure it will start to sell more due to the success of the PS1 and 2.

So anyway, there's my opinions for best selling  games (in the long-run) - Halo 3 for the X360, Smash for the Wii and GTA4 for the PS3. I'm not sure of an overall winner but it'll either be on the Wii because it will have the biggest support base or the X360 because of Halo 3 :p

So what do you guys think? Ignoring all bundled games. And for the overall winner, only count mulit-platform games for the console on which they are on. E.g. for games like Madden 08. That sold millions over every console but on an individual console level, it is considerably weaker. But say you think Madden 08 for the 360 will best sell this gen alone then that if fine. But don't add the mlti-platform sales together.

I think we should ignore all bundled games, rather than specific bundled games. In that case, I think the best seller will probably be Super Mario Galaxy. Or perhaps GTA 4 ;)

Depending on how the 360 does, Halo 3 could easily take that crown this generation.

Yeah forgot to mention that - ignore all bundled games... Or we'll get a repeat of Super Mario Bros. on the NES :p

Generally you count in all the big sellers, FF, Halo, Mario, LOZ etc. I think a RTS game on the Wii will arise and be bloody good, i cant see how one wont, the controls are perfect for it. Hrm, if i HAD to choose, id say probably SSBB. My reasoning that if the Wii continues with its train of sales, then it will have a bigger userbase to go through and if Ninty advertise this right, it will be huge. Its a guaranteed top seller, i mean look at the SSBB update thread on this site, lol, how many games gather a thread that big before its release (a long time before its release at that.)

Final Fantasy is certainly not a game I'd consider in contention for best seller of this generation. Final Fantasy games are typically good sellers, but they don't even come close to the volume that games like "GTA: whatever sequel 7" do.  GTA was Sony's biggest exclusive franchise with the PS2, by far.

Since we're not counting Wii Play and Wii Sports I would have to say Super Mario Galaxy is going to take this one. I think GTAIV is going to get very close, but SMG has so many things going for it and nothing against it.

It isn't an M rated game, it's super accessible by hardcore and casual alike, he's the iconic video game character, a good majority of the people that already own a Wii will want this game, just about anyone that buys a Wii after it's released will buy the game, and Mario games have stupid long legs.

As for the Other contenders, why I don't think they will sell the most:

GTAIV: while this game is very popular and has very long legs, it's also rated M and very controlversial. Yes, people under 17 are going to get this game but M rated games do have a harder time reaching mass markets. Still, since GTAIV is going to be on multiple systems and it is such a huge seller, I think it's going to be really close to SMG.

Halo 3: Halo 3 has sold insane number and will continue to sell decently through the holiday season but the game won't continue to sell strongly pass the holiday season. It's going to keep being played like crazy until Halo 4 or a better multiplayer game comes out, but it just won't keep selling 3 million games per month.

Super Smash Bros Brawl: I know people love this game and are waiting for it (some even more than SMG) but it just doesn't appeal to everyone like SMG does and it won't sell as well. It's still going to sell A LOT but it won't be the high seller.

Wii Fit: This is another that is going to sell really well but just not appeal to everyone like SMG or have the kind of mass following that Halo 3 or GTAIV has.

FFXIII: These games always do well but SE actually lost people with FFXII and the fact that the game is the thirteenth in the series is impressive but it's also intimidating.  I know everyone here knows that each FF game isn't really connected to the others, but not everyone knows that.  People see FFXIII and think that since they haven't played the other XII they might be missing out on something important and won't bother.  Yet another game that will do well but won't be close to anything else on this list.

Is Wii fit classed as a bundled game?

otherwise i would guess Super Mario Galaxy or Mario Kart....or Pokemon D/P, would be more accurate, although i don't know how it will fare legs wise in comparison to other DS games i think it has a chance at 20Mil, wheras Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart depend more on how the Wii's userbase expands but 15Mil should be easily possibly for either (and both).
SSB i dunno, it think it should manage 10Mil but i'm not sure if it will sell as much as SMG/MK

SMG for the wii,
Halo3 for the 360,
GT/GTA for the PS3,

With overall sales going to GTA4, very close second GT5 the full version.

The thing is, in a year or two Halo 3 may wind up in a bundle...no wait, it already IS in a bundle...so how come we're allowed to count it?

The answer, of course, is because Wii Sports is obviously going to be the number 1 game this generation and the question is easy if you allow it to be included.

So, ignoring Wii Sports and Wii Play because they're too popular...I'd say Super Mario Galaxy or some version of Grand Theft Auto.

@GT, Ha, GT5 will not outsell SSB:B or Mario Galaxy.

GT3 on an immense userbase sold just short of 15M (i assume GT4 is still selling because it is only 8-9M...or maybe it was released too late in PS2s life)

Mario 64 sold 10M on Half the userbase Wii is certain to have (Wii will definately sell at least 60M hardware)
SSB:M sold 6.5M on 1/3 of the Wiis definate userbase.
Mario Kart i am not sure about whether it can make 15M, but i reckon it will sell more than GT5 due to the PS3s userbase.
GT5 will sell for a long time on PS3, probably until GT6, but i think it will struggle to make 10M at best.

see my new thread (feel free to troll it with this opinion so we can all laugh at you)
