Forums - Nintendo - Help me understand WiiFit and the Balance Board

I understand, and believe, from the general buzz that WiiFit is going to be huge, I just don't personally understand why. So anyone that is actually in the target audience for this please share why you personally will be using it.

Some conversation starters:

  • Do people think it will be fun?
  • What about it looks fun to you?
  • Are you going to use it for exercise?
  • If you are, how far toward fit do you think it can take you?
  • Who is the target audience?
  • Beyond WiiFit do you think there will be many games that use the balance board as the primary control?

All your questions were already answered in previous WiiFit threads last month or 2.

FFXIV is going to be WiiBoard compatible. You can jump up and down on the board to crush the skulls of your enemies. It's going to be great.

I searched before I posted and only found this thread:

That talks alot about what games people think will, should, could be made with the balance board, there were not many that used the balance board as the primary controller. For example someone sugested it would make a good foot pedal for duck/cover action in a gun game but that is hardly makes it the primary control.

Any suggestions on what to search for or specific threads to read would be appreciated.

I have seen the future and it is Wii Fit ...

Seriously though my anticipation of it doing well comes from how people (who are not interested in games) reacted to seeing the promo video that was released awhile back. Being that it was (somewhat) big news around the office many of the guys I work with decided to show the video to the (handful of) women in the office; every last one of them became instantly interested in the Wii and Wii Fit. Later I decided to show the video to my sister and sister-in-law at a family dinner one Sunday and they both thought that it would be one of the most successful games ever.

The problem Nintendo faces is getting it noticed by these non-gamers because they're not going to seek out the product; in my opinion Nintendo should try to get a segment on Oprah about the changing face of videogames to demonstrate the Wii and Wii Fit.

- yes i do
- not sure, more the minigame things than yoga etc, but maybe they will be more fun than i think.
- not sure if i will be buying it, i am going to wait until some other games that i want use it because whatever we have to pay for it (it will be more than a normal game on it's own) won't be enough for just Wii fit.
- i imagine it would get you just as fit as if you did the excerises without it, what more can be said? i mean any exercise helps people get fit but it's different for each individual.
- dunno about the target audience, i would imagine if it is marketed well toward the American who buys a treadmill or other such fitness machines it could sell millions upon millions.
- i hope so, i think there was an interview with Miyamoto recently where he mentioned snowboarding games, but i am hoping it will be possible to use it like the pedals for a racing game.

I am doubting something like this will be possible, but just imagine this Simulation Racer; You are sat on your couch/chair/whatever....the Balance board is at your feet at an angle (maybe some form of stand for it...though it would work flat if not)... the Wiimote is set in the Wii wheel but you hold it the other way round (so your right thumb is on the A-button/d-pad)....also the Nunchuck is plugged in and in your left hand.
The controlls are as such:
Balance Board - press on the top right area for accelleration, press on the top left for the brake, and press on the bottom left for the clutch.
Wii remote - obvious controlls for steering (plus any buttons can do various other things like camera control.
Nunchuck - whenever you press the clutch this acts as the gearstick, so if you are in first gear you would press the board then pull back to go into second gear, then make the zigzag (forward, right forward) to go up to third. (when slowing down you could also go down two gears at a time)

the nunchuck is quite small enough to be able to reach around it and hold on to the Wii wheel when not changing gear as well, so you wouldn't have to drive one handed all the time.
there could also be different configurations for the nunchuck in such a game, so you could change it so that you just move it forward/backward to go up/down a gear (rather than making fancy shapes), or just take the nunchuck out all together and change gear with the buttons on the Wii wheel.

N.B. just realised i totally forgot that the above is just for left hand side of the road countries...in the USA you could hold the Wii wheel the normal way round and have the nunchuck (gear lever) on the right.

Hows that for a simulation racer....better than buying some seperate wheel and gear lever because you could use them in the most comfortable position (wheel isn't limited by where it can stand or stupidly close to you on your knee) the nunchuck you can thrash around as much as you want unlike cheap levers on wheels (which are also usually right by the side of the wheel)....unfortunately the Wii board wouldn't be quite as good as a set of pedals (pedals compress whereas the board (although it registers the force you put in) would not push in like a pedal)

awesome twroo...maybe I would use the manual option in a racer then.

^yeah the only racer i often use the manual option for is Burnout, that's because 1. the x/y buttons to change gear are right next to the A button so i can lean my finger over both without letting go of A, and 2. the game is easy in control terms, the difficulty of such a game is about the traffic levels.

i have been thinking the same thing recently, the best way to approach the audience would be a show like oprah, or some other equivilant, definitely the best way to get the message out to the appropriate people through the appropriate channels
