It's that the video game market must expand.
The question is, how is this done correctly?
Nintendo has had just as many flops as the next guy, but have succeeded in revolutionizing games several times.
Shoulder buttons, analog sticks, triggers, motion... these are all very successful expansions to traditional gaming.
So where do we develop the ideas for new things? Do we shoot a shotgun at a target 50 feet away? Or do we snipe it?
Sony and MS seem to be traditional snipers and have been very successful at it. However, Nintendo is the one who has come out with the best ideas overall, even though they use a shotgun approach. This time they took a page directly from the pop caps playbook and introduced minigaming on a home console.
What will be the next big thing? Obviously Digital Downloads is not the future as it is simply a purchasing method. So, what do you think? Pron gaming? WSR island?
I ask this because a lot of companies are going to be asking the exact same thing, and I predict that there is going to be a huge number of failed innovations in the near future. Not motion control, but something else, as the ps1 and ps2 were successful even though they copied the SNES and n64 control styles. In the vain that there are not any very successful applications of gaming in the future, will the gaming community implode, leaving a wake of copy cat games and only the most successful of genres? If anyone noticed, there really isn't much room to improve...
The only area that I can see that really needs improvement is dev kit help. Sony,MS, and Nintendo have all partially failed in making really nice engines for a variety of purposes. In that similar idea, Engines can serve as more than just dev help. They can filter into the audience, creating studios within a person's home. What do you think?
