Forums - Sony - if sony choose hd dvd the would have won this gen

it won the best format.

HD DVD is not much cheaper. it uses a laser diode like the blu ray.
and both proyects were started by sony engineers.
but early blu ray disc require some protection that was more expensive.

it didn't hurt sony but studios that wanted to sell data on it.

but then that got cheaper, and blu ray was 25gb-50gb for space. way better.

I highly doubt either Nintendo or Microsoft will not have a higher capacity offering for their systems in three years time.

The only other options are costly.

HD DVD, FLash drive cartridge games (shudder), or , actually that's about it for options.

^ What about downloadable =)

DVD9 is what, 8Gigs dual sided? Which console is going to package a big enough storage to allow for 7-9 games (average attach rate) and who is going to host it? Will it be servers online which limit the audience? Or will it be stores like Gamestop, where it will take like 15 minutes to download by usb2 or something like it?

Never say Never say die
and that also goes to your topic

I would assume servers. If you downloaded it on a USB whats stoping you from loading it to someone elses console. And I'd assume console manufacturer would host it.

nono, not onto a usb thumb drive, but using a transfer cable like usb2.

Yeah but download would still limit the audience. Going that route would take hours and days for most people, and others wouldn't even have the option.

Well they didn't and still lost billions.

Aion, it's up to the future to tell us whether or not BR was worth any losses incurred by the PS3. As the losses turn to profit those billions will get smaller and smaller. Then we can see the true cost of BR and ps3. Until then, there's no point talking about the two.

They already have 400 GB and 1TB blurays in the works that work on all bluray players. Bottom line: Bluray is here to stay and you can thank PS3 for that no matter how mad it makes you.
