We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

Arcade, Atari 2600, Intellivision Coming To Xbox 360?

According to a consumer survey, discovered by a Joystiq tipster, it looks like Xbox Live will be getting its own Virtual Arcade space for your Avatar.

The screenshots above, taken from the survey, show multiple player Avatars playing some old titles. While they appear to be playing on Arcade cabinets, you'll spot that an Atari 2600 is attached to the hood, and the player appears to be playing RealSports Basketball.

Atari games don't appear to be the only console available - one of the banners at the back suggests that Shark! Shark! is playable, which is a Intellivision game.

I can honest say I am not exited for Atari/intellivision games.

Scribblenauts Devs Working On XBLA Title

In an off-the-cuff answer to a recent Gamasutra interview, 5th Cell Co-Founder Jeremiah Slaczka revealed that the development house is currently working on a title for the Xbox Live Arcade.

5th Cell, who have previously only worked on the Nintendo DS with Drawn To Life, Lock's Quest and the recent Scribblenauts, have yet to move onto the console space. When Game Developer Magazine's Brandon Sheffield asked about the scope of game they were looking for on a console, Jeremiah said "We're doing an Xbox Live Arcade title next, and it's going to be pretty big."

However, don't expect the game to be coming out anytime soon. "It's totally not ready to be announced. It's far away," says Jeremiah.

Runic Games 'Fantasizing' About XBLA Release For Torchlight

A little over a year after the collapse of Flagship Studios, direct descendant Runic Games is preparing to release dungeon crawler Torchlight. But while the Diablo-like RPG is currently exclusive to the PC, CEO Max Schaefer admitted that the team wouldn't mind seeing their game on consoles.

"We talk about it a lot. We fantasize about getting the [Xbox Live Arcade] version, and that would probably be the one we did... the XBLA one," Schaefer told 1UP.

Runic Games has other commitments however, with Schaefer saying that "we're really committed to making the MMO version next, and we're a pretty small studio. We just have one little team."

If Torchlight ever made it to XBLA though, the team at Runic feels that it would be successful. "We look at it and we say, 'This would really do great," Schaefer said.

Torchlight is currently slated for release at the end of October, and will focused exclusively on single-player. It's being positioned as a budget download on the PC, and will include a full suite of development tools upon release. While any console version would necessarily lose the modding aspect, Torchlight's lightweight accessibility would seemingly make it an ideal fit for services like XBLA and PlayStation Network.

For now though, Runic is committed to developing the massively multiplayer spinoff of Torchlight after it's released to the public. Look for it on PC on October 27, with the Mac release date to be announced later.

Oh, snap. If it's for Natal, I called it some time ago: Wigglenauts!

Machinarium coming to XBLA?

You've focused only on the PC so far. Are you going to continue doing that going forward or will you be porting your games to consoles or handhelds?

JD: We also want to create an Xbox version for Machinarium, so we will see how it goes. We want to continue PC games because why not? I think the platform is the most important thing for us because we are doing old-fashioned games in terms of technology, so it should be on a platform like that.

Yeah. The potential benefit to like having it on Xbox Live or something would be that more people may see it because it kind of gives you more publicity.

JD: Yeah, sure. We really want to create an Xbox Live version especially.

Have you talked to publishers yet?

JD: We want to create it and publish it ourselves, but we talked already with Microsoft, and we are also a Nintendo registered developer, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Just a matter of time then?

JD: Yeah, I hope so.
