japanese writing has a lot of chinese characters in it, and it's hard for english/western languages speakers to distinguish which is which

Most people who can read Chinese will actually understand at least half the stuff that's written there, Japanese Kanji is essentially Chinese, it's only the Hiragana and Katakana thats unique.
