Forums - Gaming - Gamepro plaigarizes IGN's review

@twesterm
true that. (not your "well then I'm an ass" line lol)
Besides, nobody would be dumb enough to intentionally copy something verbatim during the act of plagiarism, would they?

I'll go out on a bit of a limb and say unfortunate co-incidence. the fact he used the other article as a reference probably explained why he had that mode of thinking when he was writing his article that made it come out identically.

reviewers can't exist in a vacuum, so obviously they would be exposed to other writers works as a matter of course.

Wait, the line in question is the bolded line?

People are calling that plagiarism?

There's only so many ways you can get the point across that in skirmish you can play against up to seven bots and two players can go at it split screen or you can play eight player via WiFi connection.

Jesus people, that isn't plagiarism, it's the internet being stupid.

Those two direct lines, appearing word for word right next to each other in both reviews, are highly suspect. Add in the last line also being verbatim (there's no way the "like a raincoat that makes you temporarily water resistant and a towel to dry yourself off" line is also accidentally a word-for-word copy), and plausibile deniability is gone.

You mean the lines where he's talking about gameplay mechanics?  I haven't played the game, but I'm guessing there's a raincoat that makes you temporarily water resistant and a towel to dry you off.

Again, there are so many ways to tell you that information.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of manual it would say the same exact thing.

It makes perfect sense.

No manual (WiiWare game), and it's not from Hudson's PR. A google search returns only these two sites as results.

One or two lines, okay, coincidence, even if they are carbon copies. Three? Nuh-uh, especially when all three of those lines can be written in any number of ways. What few other reviews I've read on the game avoid using these comparisons; they tend to equate them to other gaming objects (raincoat=overshield, towel=health pack, etc.).

Basically, I agree with the bolded sentence in your response, which is why I'm curious to hear how it came to be that the second review just happened to directly copy three lines out of thirty-three (including the intro. and conclusion). Yes, one line in eleven was essentially shared between the two reviews.

But if you want to chalk it all up to coincidence, knock yourself out.

Why didnt they plagiarize the conduit review from IGN? they would have made them look less like a bunch of dicks.

Anyway the guy should have been fired, my understanding is that IGN is one of the most popular gaming sites and hoping that people wont notice you ripping them off is just dumb.

Between this and their Conduit review, this must be the most attention Gamepro has recieved since their totally rad tv show.

If you follow the paragraphs around the ones taken word-for-word, you'll find they follow exactly the same structure.  He uses some synonyms, changes a couple expressions, but he's clearly just rewording the IGN review.

Glad to see gamepro was up front about it and fired his ass, blatant plagiarism shouldn't be tolerated.
