Sony: We Could've Come Out With PS2.5, But Didn't

There's been a lot made recently about the PS3's price point. Some say it's too expensive, some want a price cut. But for Sony exec Jack Tretton, those folks are not thinking long term.

"We could've come out with a PlayStation 2.5 for $299 or less, and in the first two or three years it would sell extremely well," he explains. "But there would be a point where people would be going, 'I am not really seeing the incremental leap.'"

For Tretton and Sony, they're "sacrificing the short term to pay dividends in the long term." Not sure how that works for Sony's bottom line, but hey, their company!

"People are having short-term thinking—the platform is not even three years old," Tretton adds. "It was $599; it's now $399." He goes on to say that Sony isn't planning to snare all customers in day one, but over a ten year period.

We're just glad that Sony didn't put out a PS2.5 so we have to buy another console. We're not made of money, you know.

lol sony amazes me with its arrogance

But war... war never changes

Nintendo did it first like always

@PullusPardus

Correct with 2 Gamecubes duct-taped together. That is a classic saying

But they shouldn't had came out with a PS2.5. The PS3 is just fine just it was an expensive console at launch with no well known franchises to talk with that $600 price tag. Because I for one didn't purchase mine until MGS4 was nearing release!

Playstation 2.5 could still be a success. They should get working on that.

@Graves

Wouldn't that be late and wouldn't you consider the PS3 Slim a PS3.5?

LOL @ the pic. :))

Microsoft came out with a $299 console. They need to rethink their statements and try again with something better. How about a statement which implies they might have learned something over the last few years or something like that? You know... Something useful for a change.

Tease.

Jack Tretton is the fuggin man.

So, they didn't and now they regret about not having done this?
