Forums - General - UK housing question....

Ok... I've read this article and I was wondering what some people here thought of it.

If i'm reading this right... the prime minister is promising to pass legislation to discriminate against immigrants?

I mean here that would be seen as illegal... and i guess will be soon in the UK.

It's not illegal to be biased against people who were born outside the country?

I mean. No one actually agrees with this right?

Everyone should have equal access to housing.

social housing really should be fair to everyone, be they legal migrant or born here, that's the idea of social housing.

*Sigh* But unfortunately we live in a country of xenophobes. People would rather vote for the BNP nowadays and so I'm not surprised that Brown has moved to do this.

Just to clear things up, most people in Britain are not xenophobes, but enough are to make a change and that's really sad.

-edit-

To be honest you can't pick up any of the right wing tabloids here (Daily mail, Daily Express, etc...) without seeing stories about "their opinion" on how we should not give houses to immigrants.

If you don't have enough social housing to go around, stop letting in immigrants.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

So all immigrants require social housing?

Stopping immigration because a few require social housing is a silly idea. The kind of idea UKIP support.

Well, by local people it means people who come from the local area, even I would be discriminated against if I wanted social housing elsewhere in the country.

@samuel

my definition of an economic migrant doesnt have to be an immigrant.

My post wasn't in response to yours, but to the thread in general.

Anyway, can I now turn this into an anti-Thatcher rant? After all, it was her who sold off all the council houses and got us in this mess to start with. I personally think that we should be spending money now on building social housing and regenerating some areas that have become, well, in need of regeneration. It would also create a few thousand jobs, which would be good for the current situation.

This sounds like its more about making a bunch of ingnorant plebs actually see the truth that housing is given to people in the local community.

To be honest, I think we give away housing far too readily to scum that are more then happy to constantly claim benefits and scrounge off the government and waste tax payers money. We're not hard enough on the wasters. The people that actually want to work their way out of council housing and others on the waiting lists effectively suffer. It doesn't matter whether you're an immigrant or British, if you're just going to drain and abuse the system then you deserve to suffer.

Discriminating against anyone just because of their nationality is wrong.

If you let an immigrant into your country, you should give him/her the same rights as other people who live in the country.

It's OK to deny immigrant status... but once you accept someone as an immigrant, why would you discriminate based on that? What's the legal or logical basis for that?
