Forums - Sales - Price cut? How useful is that?

Demand is not linear, it is based upon a curve. Just because it saw a 50% increase in sales the first time around does not translate into a 50% price cut the second time. It should be far greater.

Do you realize that a 50% successive increase is exponential, and consequently a "curve" as you said? Linear increase would be "adding 10k to the weekly sales", which cannot be expressed as a percentage.

Just as important as the price drop is the fact that the playstation 3 finally has some wonderfully great, and unique games coming out...Eye of Judgment, Ratchet & Clank, Folklore, Haze, Uncharted, Singstar, etc. (Let alone HS and Warhawk just released, although Lair was a total flop)---I think these will help the sales nearly as much as the price drop--only fanboys would say that NONE of those titles hold any appeal to them.

Well, I now only have access to a PS3 & 360...Plan on buying a wii soon (lol, if I can ever find one available!) but will probably wait until some of the major RPG's come out like Dragon Quest & Tales, etc.

Anyhow, I'm so far behind in games to play that I'm not in a huge hurry (lol, haven't even gotten a chance to finish God of War II yet!)

I see it doing 50k after the price cut week from that point on.

We will wait and see... I for one would consider a $399 PS3 depending on what features it has removed to bring it to that price.

^^ I'd wait to buy the full package for 500$ rather than a stripped-down 400$ one.

IMO:

Japan

It's been doing between 10-20k each week although it's been declining.  Seeing as the comparitive cost of the 20Gb PS3 in Japan is around $400, the new model would need to come in under this amount, even $350, if this is the case, then I reckon it could be closer to double.

NA

Since the July price drop to $499, the PS3 has been doing 20-40k each week, again it's been declining.  A new price point at $100 less would bump up the figures at least double I think.  I don't see any reason why it can't be doing 90-100k+ each week.  Although it's likely to be closer to 70k each week.

Europe & Others

This is where I reckon the biggest impact will be.  We are currently seeing around 30k a week.  A £299 price point in the UK would bump sales up to Wii numbers i.e. 70-80k.

The bottom line is, IF this happens, it should have a huge impact on the sales for Xmas.  But it will be a shame if more and more PS3 games get delayed until next year seeing as the PS3 needs good AAA games for Xmas and the list is getting smaller all the time.

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

As a rough guestimate I would say that 75% to 80% of gamers will simply not consider a console which is over $300 regardless of what it comes with or what games are available; even then I would expect that 60% of gamers will not spend (much) more than $200 for a game console. Reducing the price to $400 will (potentially) make the PS3 more competitive, but the PS3 will remain shut out of the largest and most important segment of the gaming market.

God, you must have things so cheap in the US.  Us guys in the UK have to pay through the nose for anything really.  $300 is very cheap for a good games console these days.  $200 is positively a steal.

In that case, you would do better to buy a 60 GB now... It's the best PS3 model in the world in terms of hardware, with perfect backwards compatibility, and it's going to disappear soon! The 20 extra GB in the disc are probably useless, and a 80 GB hard drive is dirt cheap anyway...

Does anybody else agree with me that although it will definetly increase sales, (by 60-65% in my opinion), this will not help the PS3 lose its image as an expensive console. I feel that people (unfortunetly) have made up their minds about it and nevertheless will think it is expensive. In my opinion, the way to go is not to make it cheaper (although everyone of us would like to) but to "buy exclusives" and bring out more games. If you have a good enough game base, a higher cost can be tolerated, and 3rd party support is as always good on PS3.
I mean even if PS3 was say to boost itself to Wii levels by price cuts, hasn't it already lost?
It has to try to beat the Wii atleast in Japan to be able to come up on top. Or do you think it is too late for that and all is doomed?
Anybody agrees?
