In entertainment no one is even close to Michael Jackson in stardom power.

The persons mentioned so far in the thread like Bono, Madonna, Britney, John Lennon, J K Rowling (lol what?), Tom Cruise, Paul McCartney and Bob Marley are midgets compared to Michael Jackson. Laughable comparisons really (which actually just shows how HUGE Michael Jackson is).

And historically only Elvis can match MJ.

Madonna is bigger than Michael Jackson and unlike Jackson she never went away or went completely crazy (she's just partially crazy... all that Kabbalah stuff). Her Sticky and Sweet Tour is the highest grossing tour ever by a solo artist. She's tied with Elvis for most top ten singles in the US. Her Confessions On A Dance Floor album debuted at #1 in 29 countries (a world record now surpassed by her own album, Hard Candy, which debuted at #1 in 37 countries.

Well considering the Beatles are the best selling music act of all time I think they're in the same "league". The same goes for Elvis.

Now according to wikipedia (I know it isn't gospel but it sure is convenient :P) It goes like this.

1 billion +

Beatles, Elvis

500 to 999 million

MJ, Crosby

That doesn't even take into account the Beatles solo sales either. So the Beatles are definitely in the sale league.

Oh com'on now. Madonna even had to change her music genre, her style and everything because she lost so much popularity. She's nobody. She had Britney help her trying to get back in the lime-light. Madonna is hardly even a superstar any more.

She always changed her music style and appearance from album to album, it's her thing. Her tours are always sold out even if the highest tickets go for $350 a piece.

Musical influence?

Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, David Bowie, Elton John, Bob Marley and Elvis Presley.

As far as being just a pure megastar though, probably just Jimi Hendrix, Elton John and Elvis Presley.

Madonna of course. I'm sure a lot of people think of bulls***/controversies when they think of Madonna. All things told she still makes wonderful pop music.
When she eventually dies (let's hope it's in the distant future), I'm sure people will remember her for her music foremost, much like is happening now with MJ.
Furthermore I think it would be pathetic if she would still make the same music after 25 years.....
