@the

a bit like the ps3 last year then... that had a major bump due to a price cut. and now its down... "duh"...

err, you're on a site called vgchartz with all the data at your hands and yet you forget about history so easily. The PS3 after the price cut OCT 2007 was still more expensive than the same price as the 360 and it was outselling it month after month since that month until the 360 got the cut on Sept04 2008. It was MORE EQUALLY expensive, see? It's not the same. The 360 is still cheaper and look at the numbers, nothing major, over 400K this year. And the 360 is not only cheaper than the PS3 this time, it's also cheaper than the Wii. Mark my words, the 360 is living the best of its days. Marked?

In all honesty it's really funny how people think that only the cheapest 360 sku is selling.  The Pro console has always been the primary seller.  The only time the Arcade sold more was directly following the price cut during the holiday months last year.

You just contradicted yourself

No xbox 360 cost $499......there was & is a PS3 SKU at $499 too

so overall the "average" price of the PS3 was larger than that of xbox 360's

NOT the same

Notice I never said the Xbox 360 was failing. I just think the latest price-cut has been a failure in the long run.

But it wasn't... see my post

Every console is down except the 360 compared to last year. The PS3 is down ONE MILLION console, but the 360 is UP 0.5 MILLION consoles.

If you consider that a long term failure than no matter what will say will sway your view.. hence this thread is just a waste of time...

not to mention xmas '08...  that was some turnaround.  go back and look at the graph.

& all your graph proves it that the INITIAL impact of the price cut was HUGE.....& it would cus it was in the holidays

but the long-term effect is terrible

At the time of the price cut, there was a $400/500 PS3.  At that same time the 360 Pro was still $400 and the Elite was still $500.  I'm pretty sure there wasn't a $500 PS3 until Christmas after their long cheap run with the 40GB then 80GB $400 model.

the 360 is doing fine. The price cut worked and is currently working wonders. Until SONY responds in kind the gap will keep getting bigger.

Long Live SHIO!

^dude, 11 million a year selling at $200 is not success for any console in any planet, unless you are a 5 year old machine or older.

11 million consoles in a recession?

That would actually be good..

If increasing revenue from console sales was the reason for the price cut then it was a failure.

However it was to increase the volume of sales. PS3 and Wii are down YOY 360 is up. Hence the price cut was a success.

Not to mention revenue =/= profits.  The PS3 would likely be better off if it made less revenue by focusing on each console making a profit.  They'd sell less but make more $$$.

@nightsurge what price cut are you talking about? in Sept 2008 the Xbox SKUs got cut from $280, $350 and $450 to $200, $300, and $400... the PS3 price was the same as it is since OCT 2007, $400/$500.

@gebx take into account they make less money on each console since the price cut.
