Would've hoped for SW:KOTOR but that's not really "old school" but I'll still have my hopes up. Either Grim Fandango or Monkey Island remake.

It's only the first wave though, and since Republic Commando is listed "classics" extends from at least the early 90's to last gen.

Anyhow, a bit more from the Twitter:

And this is just the beginning. We know how much you guys love our old games. This little announcement is just a start.
The team here (alongside Steam) have worked on the old games to make them work in XP/Vista. Very low system requirements ;)

Yesssssssss.

Crossing my fingers for an eventual KotOR2 rerelease so I can still run the Restoration Project if I ever upgrade to Vista or Windows 7 (non-Pro).

Unfortunately I am not surprised by this announcement in the least. This studio supposedly laid off half their employees last year. Not that the studio has been properly run for years. We have all known that for some time. Specifically the gaming public was never given what they were asked for. The fans wanted new installments in Battlefront, Kotor, Rogue Squadron, Jedi Knight, and so on and so forth.

For whatever reason they neglected popular properties, and instead decided to develop properties that were both new and niche. Did anyone of us actually expect a sequel for something we really do want to play. We never actually get what we want.

Speak for yourself my good man: I'm eminently pleased with this announcement. I'll be buying all the Indy games, and then picking up any and all of their point-n-clicks after that. Tie Fighter and X-Wing also need a replay. And there are people in this thread who are already asking for KOTOR titles.

Great!

The best part about today's announcement is in my opinion that for the first time we might be able to play Grim Fandango on modern systems without problems (yeah, I know GF, MI 2&3, DOTT and Full Throttle have not been announced yet, but now I'm sure they'll come - either as remakes à la MI 1 or  "just" as XP/Vista versions).

No, I got what I want. You not getting what you wanted isn't surprising, but I totally got what I wanted and expected.

More information from a Joystiq interview with LucasArts CEO Darrell Rodriguez:

"While these ten titles are straight ports – so no Steam Achievements, and no fancy new graphics and sound a la Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition – LucasArts is considering enhanced versions of other titles, though "a lot of it will ultimately depend on the commercial success of Monkey Island Special Edition," we're told. "We have the plans in our back pocket and if things go extremely well, we'll roll out those plans and put them into action. Whether it's Maniac, Day of the Tentacle, or Grim." And those releases may come to other digital distribution platforms – much of that strategy will be determined by the success of this latest initiative."

Some people have exceedingly low standards. I personally do not get excited about games being released again in a new format. Call me a prude, but I only get excited over new games. You could have had and played any of these games if you had really cared. There are bargain bins, and these things called emulators which were already meeting these needs.

This is Lucasarts milking their old games for every nickle they are worth nothing more. Nice that you have another option to play them, but hardly something to get excited about. More to the point it is not newsworthy every developer does this these days.

Oh and I think if you made a pole of which people would have preferred. A new game for a great franchise, or old games being made available for digital download. You would probably see the vast majority would have wanted a new high profile game. Rather then digital download for games that are already in their collection.

You are not describing "low standards", just different value metrics according to which we base our purchasing decisions. You insist that games need to be new. I don't! I never played the classic LucasArts games. This allows me to have a ton of new gaming experiences with minimal effort on the part of the developers.

Remember Dodece: not everybody owns these games! This should not come as a shock to you.

And even those who own and played the old adventures might consider re-buying them, me for example. I played almost every LA adventure game, 5 of them are in my sig (and among my all-time favorite games).

Yes, I will replay them (once again), I will pay money for them again, and - let's not forget - adventure fans will also get new games. starting with Tales of Monkey Island (not thanks to LucasArts, I expect nothing from them except re-releases and remakes), but thanks to Telltales, where ex-LucasArts workers convinced their ex-company to give them their IPs. Telltales at least (try to) continue LucsaArts' legacy.

A tip for those who plan to play the two Indiana Jones adventure games for the first time: "The Last Crusade" is a good game, but in the end it just tells the story of the 3rd movie and it pales in comparision to most other LA adventures. "Fate of Atlantis", on the other hand, is one of the best point&click adventures ever made (in my opinion, at least).

It's not just yours, though.
