I would do if it was a free service pack for Vista like it ought to be. Apart from the performance improvement (which, by the way, doesn't show up consistently in quantitative testing), what other new features are there that i) people will actually use and ii) aren't fixes to broken stuff in Vista?

Yeah, and for 50 dollars, XP owners who game can finally upgrade and use DX10, and all the modern features they missed when they skipped Vista. Vista owners, for 50 bucks, can increase the speed of their computer, and get some more streamlined new features.

50 dollars is the right price.

You know, you might consider shedding some light on these new features if you want anyone to give a damn about them.

And from what I've read, W7 breaks backwards compatilibity with older programs even worse than Vista does, and as a (retro) gamer this is a deal breaker for me. So I'm sticking with the older stuff for the time being.

Just curious, where have you read that it breaks compatibility worse than Vista? It doesn't make any sense to me that it would. Also, if you have a version that has the Windows XP virtual machine, then it should be compatible with the same things XP is too, so depending on how retro, you may still need DosBox or programs like it sometimes, but even XP needs it sometimes.

The thing he completely misses is that XP owners cannot directly upgrade to Windows 7. The install will reformat the HDD to install it so there is no saving old files.

Also he forgot that Windows 7 isnt DX10 based. It is DX11 based. A step up from DX10.

ugh no.

it vista make over.
installed on a celeron 2.53ghz 1.2gb ram with a nvidia fx 5500.
it ran slow and used most of my ram. leaving with only 100mb of boot.

had problems with AC 97 drivers (doesn't work well with 5.1 windows 7).

and Aero still clunky as ever.

while it a 10% improvement over vista.

i can run ubuntu with all the effects and never go down 50fps.

i am using ibm lotus symphony for office, netbeans for school proyects, banshee for music, firefox 3.5 as a power.

ps3 media server for streaming and even some windows applications with whine, i don't think i will have to return to windows in a while.

for gaming machine i think the desktop i built still faster in xp DX9 and steam.

That's because your specifications are not all that great. Your processor is fine, but the RAM could be higher and a better graphics card is needed. Try this:

i did, it even said i could run aero,  RC1 was slow =(, actually what really bug me it's sound didn't work well.

1256mb of ram it's not enough for windows 7/vista.

it ran well on the notebook with the core 2 duo, but well thats muscle.

but ubuntu flies in both machines, i am thinking of getting rid of vista in the notebook too.

Really? I was doubtful of Windows 7 for a short bit. I'm glad to hear that reviews for it are great. I may consider changing over from vista to Win7 on my PC. Will it actually improve overall performance?

Yep, sure does, if you are asking from Vista to Win7, it does.

1) It runs great on my $600 laptop that has a pretty wimpy dual core and 1 Ghz of RAM. This same laptop really struggled with Vista, which is what shipped on the laptop. As soon as I switched it to Windows 7, my issues with long boot ups and long waits to be able to start using the machine were solved. I get to my desktop much quicker, and it is responsive right away. My tower is a gaming tower, so it handled Vista and Windows 7 without breaking a sweat. Most of my testing has been on a laptop that had no business running Vista. This is NOT NOT NOT a new skin installed over the top of Windows Vista. Changes have been made "under the hood" on this OS and there is a noticeable performance improvement. That is the single most important thing to remember.

2) The new toolbar is awesome. Just use it. You'll see.

3) I am blown away by the new media functionality. You can now access your media library over an internet connection......and it works REALLY well. I've tried it out in several different situations, and it is seamless. You just open up your media player and there's your stuff. Even HD video streams damn near flawlessly just as if you were sitting in your own network. (This could probably be added to Vista too, but I don't know/remember if it's reliant on the new Homegroup feature or not.)

4) Homegroups make it much easier for Joe Schmoe to set up a network.

5) For some reason I was never able to get Vista to let me sync up with my 360 as a Media Center Extender, and it's working beautifully in Windows 7.

6) It will have free Windows XP virtualization in some of the skus.

7) Even in its release candidate status, it NEVER crashes. (Vista is actually pretty good about that too, despite what the Apple commercials tell you.)

8) It's going to be priced lower than Vista was at retail.

9) One of the biggest Vista haters/detractors I have ever met is blown away by Windows 7's performance increases and compatibility improvements, therefore I don't have to listen to him bitch anymore.

10) It looks sexy.

Zen says:

Also, it increase performance over Vista, and comes with Direct X 11, for better graphics and performance on your games.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I'm a Vista owner.
How does the upgrade work?
Do I still keep all my files?
Do my drivers still work?
Do all my 3rd party programs like step mania still work?
Help would be greatly appreciated cause this really has my interest.

Read my post right before yours:

Upgrade works by installing the OS, it overwrites your old one.

Yes you still keep your files.

If your drivers work for Vista, they will very, very likely work on Win 7.

I don't know if your programs will still work. They probably will.

Again, read the post above yours, and watch the video.

OK so from a minimalist perspect of effency here is what I'm getting

Xoj is saying that Win7 is not as memory effecient as WinXP, but pretty descent with using CPU performance.

Zen is saying that MEM and CPU usage is better than Vista and is praising the features putting it on a higher platform than XP.

In both cases sounds like XP is a better solution if your not looking for feature rich enviroment. Is that about right?
