Forums - Gaming - How many 10 million sellers will be released throughout this gen?

Got this from a couple of threads talking about 10-million sellers, so I wondered, which platforms would have more games this gen that reached 10 millions? And this is counting all platforms, DS, PSP and PC included, but all seperate. For MMOs, since it's a different business, we count a paying subscriber as a copy sold.

Here are the ones that reached, and will almost certainly reach 10 millions (in parenthesis are possible titles, but don't count):

Wii - 7

Wii Sports
Wii Fit
Wii Play
Mario Kart Wii
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Wii Sports Resort
Wii Fit Plus
(Mario Galaxy?)
(Mario Galaxy 2?)
(NSMB?)

Xbox 360 -1

Halo 3
(Modern Warfare 2?)
(Halo Reach?)

PS3 - 1

Gran Turismo 5
(Final Fantasy XIV?)

DS - 7

Nintendos
New Super Mario Bros.
Brain Age
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
Mario Kart DS
Brain Age 2
Animal Crossing

PSP - "1"

lawlroflcopter

PC - 7

The Sims 3
Spore
Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty
World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
Diablo 3
Lineage 3
(Call of Duty 4?)
(Modern Warfare 2?)
(Aion: The Tower of Eternity?)
(Starcraft 2: Legacy of Void?)
(Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm?)
(New Blizzard MMO?)
(Plants vs Zombies?)

Will PSP have no 10 million sellers before this gen runs out?

Why is that there's such a big difference between the "top 3" platforms (PC/DS/Wii) with 20 titles selling 10 million compared to the "bottom 3" (PS3/PSP/X360) with only 2 titles, when the bottom 3 would supposedly have a more hardcore-centric userbase that buys more games on average?

You forgot Wii Sports Resort. That's a title almost garuanteed to reach 10 million.

Otherwise, nice list. 10 million is quite hard to reach, and you need a huge installbase to be able to get even close to that. Also, the more 'casual' consoles have games that appeal to a broader audience, which means they appeal to the entire installbase. 'Hardcore' games are usually more niche.

Yeah, it's not like we should take userbase into consideration. Plus, what is the PC userbase? A couple billion? If that's all the 10 million sellers it has, that's pretty pathetic.

You're asking a really obvious question here.

PC's gaming userbase is 300 millions, according to recent studies. PC is a whole different fish because only slightly more than half the revenue goes to buying games, while the rest is spent on subscription, microtransactions, etc... also there's far more competition on PC than on consoles: There are more PC games being developed than in all consoles combined. So it's even harder for a PC game to break through a huge barrier like 10 millions.

But forget PC. What about comparing Wii vs X360 and PS3? Sure Wii has a bigger installed base, but isn't the PS360 base supposed to have a more hardcore and informed userbase? And I'm sure that there's much more ad push for PS360 games than Wii games.

And PSP? Even with such a big installed base, why is there no game even reaching anywhere near 10 millions?

The software figures are pretty poor for a 300 million userbase. And I'd like to know about that study. Does it include people who own gaming PCs but don't game on them very often? What's the sample size? I doubt they surveyed 300 million people. And if it's not a survey, how do they gather this data? Nobody ever asked me anything. But enough about that.

Library size is a poor excuse. The DS has a bigger library than any of the other consoles, and accordingly, a larger userbase. A lot of games come out for the PC, but a lot of them are also incredibly obscure. Often the consoles with the largest hardware and software sales have the largest libraries (and feel free to use circular reasoning here).

And I don't know if you really can't figure out all your questions by yourself. They're not that hard. The top selling Wii games sell exceptionally well because they are seen as the defining games of the system. This is why titles like Wii Fit, Wii Play, and Mario Kart Wii have such high attach rates. It's been true for Nintendo consoles before. And if we're talking about ads, the Wii has plenty. Most of the big Wii games were included in the Wii style commercials, which were played endlessly back in 2007 (and possibly in 2008, I stopped watching TV for the most part that year).

As for the PSP, you know the answer to that question. Why are you asking these things? Can you really not figure out the obvious answer for yourself?

PSP=Piracy=Poor attach rates

After a year or so, the PSP became heavily pirated, and software sales became lower and lower. Most of the stellar PSP sellers are older games, because newer games just can't reach sales totals like the games near to launch.

That's too simplistic a view on PCs.  The PC install base is large, sure, but most of it is business users, home business, etc and not for gaming at all.

Personally the two platforms that seem to produce really big sellers are Nintendo platforms or the PC.  Xbox has done well although its interesting this has been by bringing a much more PC orientated gaming experience (and titles) to console.  Sony consles sold a lot of titles over a huge breath of genres, but only a few were actually really big sellers so far as I can see.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

That list is a bit optimistic I think.

added Wii Sports Resort, which is expected to reach 10 millions.

The Wii section should look as follows

Wii Sports
Wii Fit
Wii Play
Mario Kart Wii
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Wii Sports Resort
NSMB
(Wii Zelda?)
(Mario Galaxy?)
(Mario Galaxy2?)
(DQX?)
(Wii Fit +?)

At the very least

10 million is a lot. For reference, it's worth mentioning that VGChartz has tracked only 31 million sellers so far.
