Forums - Sony - PS3 Slim manufacturing contracts signed

Sony predicted they would sell 13 million PS3 consoles this fiscal year. It's not possible in my opinion unless they know for sure they will soon :

1) cut the PS3 price

AND / OR : 2) release a new PS3 slim

AND / OR : 3) release GT5

If they do 1), 2) and 3), they'll definitely reach their goal. There are tons of people worldwide waiting to buy a PS3 right now, and the GT series is one of the biggest system seller ever.

Maybe... but if you bought a wii or a 360 3 years ago, a new slim PS3 may seem interesting.

See how the PSP with the new "slim&lite" and some cool games sold (and sells) well...
Same could happen to the slim PS3 with software like GT5 and FF13. Who knows...

Unfortunately whereas this can be seen as good news for Sony fans I am pretty sure that this will not go unoticed.

September is my bet for a release mainly because this would be the best time to maximise the Holiday/Xmas period. I think they still have a mountain to climb but if the price is right and not to many corners cut this will put them in the frame for the end of the year.

Although, expect the unexpected especially that time of year when the other console guys try to out do each other.

im depending on a slim release so i can buy a current PS3 after a price cut. can someone tell me if the current ones are back-compatible?

Early models had the PS2 effectively on a chip. A cost saving measure put paid to that and they now emulate in software. This emulation as I understand is similar to that offered by the Xbox in so much as only X number of titles are catered for.

The Phat PS3 is not sonys problem. its the price point and lack of marketing
frist party games. if sony could afford a 100 price drop they would have done it allready
you dont need a slim to drop the price lol. sony said they dont care about third place

Nope, they aren't. PS2's are very cheap these days though, so unless you want upscaled PS2 games, there's no point in a BC PS3.

sadly, here they're still £80.. which maybe isnt that much (its $120 or whatever) but its more thank im willing to pay right now...my idea was to get the PS3 after the price cut, and buy a PS2 if i could find one for less than the difference... but oh well. will have to wait and see i guess.
